Avoiding I-70 back to Denver International

So last weekend we flew to Denver for a 3 day ski weekend.  We were flying home Sunday evening, so I planned our last day at Loveland. Despite being the closest mountain, traffic on I-70 meant we had to leave by 1pm at the latest to make a 6pm flight.

 

Looking at a map, I was wondering if spending the last day at Eldora might work out better?  It means driving an extra hour in the morning, but if we can stay on mountain later it might be worth it.  How is traffic heading out from Eldora on a Sunday in the direction of Denver International?

I wouldn`t expect much traffic except possibly on the road down to Boulder (which I have never done on a Sunday afternoon).  From Boulder you can either take the toll road which has no traffic because of close to $10 in tolls (which they mail a bill to you) or go back towards Denver.

other option is to take 72 to 93 to I70, but probably no faster than going thru Boulder.  Generally in either case, as stated, traffic should be no big deal...maybe 90 minutes either way to the rental car turn in?  haven't skied Eldora in about two years, but never had any real traffic, even on Sunday PM.

Thanks for the feedback.  This time around I'll go with Eldora on my last day.  Should be able to stay on the mountain a couple hours longer.

Although for many, 4 hr at Loveland is more fun than 6 hr at Eldora ...

On this trip unfortunately not.  Wife absolutely has to be at work on Monday.

Maybe, but I'll have 2 days at Loveland on this trip and I've never been to Eldora.

I went to Eldora last year instead of up I-70 and enjoyed it greatly.

Never skied Loveland so I can't compare but I've skied the rest of Summit County at one time or another.  Not as expansive but still a lot of fun.

Been to both places extensively.  Worked at Loveland 4 seasons.  I can actually take the bus from my house up to Eldora.  Boulder Canyon is the catch.  Drive the speed limit and the Ned Heads will tailgate your ass on the way up.  Drive the speed limit on the way down and the Boulder Pyscho drivers will tailgate your ass and try to push you into Boulder Creek.   Drive fast and CO Highway Patrol will write you a speeding ticket (voice of experienceicon13.gif).   There's another speed trap by the Nederland High School.

 

There's one thing you can do at Eldora that you can't do at Loveland (hahaha John, I know you are reading thisbiggrin.gif).  You too Dustin!   Thank you again Rob for your support.icon14.gif
