Patrol Work - International Qualitifications (Canada/US/Australia)

Hi All,

I'm an engineer working in Australia, however I'm thinking that for the next few years I'm going to take the summers off and go north for the winter seasons. To help subsidise the venture I'm going to be working over there and I'm quite interested in working as a patroller rather than doing the resort/retail thing. I'm considering either professional or volunteer work, most likely in Canada due to the Working Visa that Australians can get there.

What I wanted to know is, what sort of qualificaitons can I get myself over here during the Australian winter that would be of use when applying for work as a patroller in the USA or Canada?

Is there any sort of internationally recognised medical qualification that would be of use, or a specialist ski patrollers course?

Cheers

Kris

Probably a bunch of people one here that have patrolled in Aus though.

For British Columbia, for starters, most patrollers have a level 3 Occupational First Aid ticket, which is a 2 week (70 hours) course that must be renewed every 2 years.

In addition, I would suggest contacting the patrol leader a whatever ski resort that you are considering and do it now before staff disperse for the summer.

http://www.mecnz.ac.nz/ one patrol course that will get you a patrol job anywhere in the world.

Patrolling in NZ you will need NZ Avalanche 1, or equivalent, ie CA Avo 1, and Pre Hospital Emergency Care (Phec), which is a week long first aid course or equivalent as a minium. Things that would help are things like avo 2, snow blasting ticket, past experince
