Pain on the outside of the leg/ankle?

Hi All,

I originally posted this question in the injury forum but people recommended I post it here.

Original post: http://www.epicski.com/t/110798/pain-on-the-side-of-the-leg-ankle

When I'm strapped into my boots, I get a pain on the left side of my left ankle/leg (more towards the front than the back.) It's fairly high up (around the top of the top of the boot and extending down from there.) It feels like it could be a bruise. It's been getting worse and it's quite a strong pain. I left the hill early today as a result.

When I'm back at home, it's not that bad. It doesn't appear to be linked to any particular movement although if I point my toes down (when I'm not in my boots,) I can get it to twinge. I'm not here to get medical advice - that's what doctors and physiotherapists are for. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and if you were able to discover what caused it or how to fix it.

I went to a store and they seemed a little surprised that the pain was on the side of my ankle - I think they more commonly see pain on the front of the shin.

Is it possible to have boots too tight or is it more likely that they were too loose and I banged it? Any other ideas?

odds are the boot is too big, and you are banging around.   But what is the shell fit like on the boot?  do you feel any extra movement?   worse when touring or skiing?  sock thickness effect it at all?

Sorry - missed this reply.

The problem is still there.  It's coming and going.  I had some physio (assuming a tendon or muscle issue) and rest and it got better but now it's worse again.  It's around the left fibula.  I almost wonder if it could be a stress fracture.  It might just be a weak tendon or muscle that needs to heal/strengthen.  This is my first year of skiing ever and I've been pushing hard.

The boot seems tight enough, especially around the lower leg.  I can only get to the second or third position (of six) on the upper buckle.  Shell fit is good and I've had the shell fit checked by two pro boot fitters.  It's probably a tiny bit on the large side because I am using it for touring as well.

Touring is fine.  Walking with the upper buckles undone is fine.  Walking with the upper buckles done up is one of the worst situations.  I don't think sock thickness will matter but I can try playing around with that.
