Well, those are two big hurdles you've put into one sentence - frex there was definitely quite a bit of plastic there to become both old and suspect. But there were also design choices (and compromises), that are no longer justified by the market. Like having a choice of either non-adjustable toe wings or self-loosening toewings. Like having an AFD that would squish down under skiing pressure. And, as dubious design choices go, don't get me started on Pilot or Propulse.
I've been pretty fortunate with bindings to date (knock wood) - they've kept me in or let me out as needed, so I haven't paid close attention to design differences.
