Speaking of such, a couple months ago I picked up a used pair of 2009 Atomic GS 12's...
I'd been curious what it would be like to get on an actual race ski. Very different, but I adjusted to them after a few runs and had a great time ripping groomers one firm day. Big swooping turns, but also smaller radius turns were not a problem. ( Not slalom gates, though! ;-) Very solid/stable, and definitely better edge grip than anything else I've ever skied on. Look forward to getting out on them again, but for now with soft/spring conditions there are other things to ride.
Like these, for example - 186cm 2005 Head iM85...
I bought them off CL last year, mainly to get the Railflex bindings. Skied them once and did not like them at all. Tried moving bindings forward and back but could never get comfortable/centered on them, they felt sluggish and planky, just meh. Put em in the closet and was thinking about selling them recently, but decided to give em one more try first. Started out the same,so tried moving bindings forward, still no good, then moved bindings back, -15mm. That seemed to find the sweet spot, and skiing them over a couple days I ended up liking them quite a bit. Put a 1/2 tune on, and they did well on semi-firm, were great in a few inches of soft snow, and shone in crud. I'll be hanging onto these pups.
Typically my max for new (to me) skis is $100, and these two pairs mentioned above each came in under that threshold. I play around, keep what feels good, sell what doesn't. Usually get back what I originally laid out - it all seems to come out in the wash.
So many skis, so little time.
