The Ski Luddite Thread - Page 6

Well, I'll have to try the homemade wobble board and see how it goes. Not sure exactly how it relates to the wobble board but I did just pop on my ski boots and verify I can slowly squat all the way down till my butt's on my heels, and back up, and stay balanced fore/aft. (That is LeMaster's "forward lean" exercise from "Ultimate Skiing", page 164.)

That's on a flat floor, not a wobble board.  ;-)

NOS PSA

There's a pair of virgin 193CM Volant Machete Hucksters up on eBay now, with a little less than 3 days left on the auction. Asking $100, $200 buy it now.

Machete Huckster
110-92-102
183, 193 cm
$749
As far as fat skis for deep powder, Volant got with the program early on with the Chubb (below), but the new Huckster takes fat to new levels. Designed with input from Volant athlete Shane McConkey, it's wide enough to skim in the deepest pow, with a very straight sidecut (48-meter radius) that wants to go down the hill, not across it. Add to that its twin-tip design and you're ready land big airs fakey. OK, Shane is; but you can dream. Construction: Volant's unique steel cap with wood core.

Article is an interesting little time capsule itself!  ;-)

^^^That guy googled the skis and found a WTB thread I'd started on TGR.  He asked me if I was interested in them, and then posted a thread asking how much they were worth.

Then he asked me to make an offer on them, and warned me that if I low-balled him, he would take them to Ebay.  I made him what I felt was a fair offer, and he responded by saying that they'd been posted on Ebay and that the reserve would be set at the same amount as my offer.

Well that sucks at a low level! Shame all that bad karmojo has to be part of the deal. Kinda interesting skis.

You low-balled him; those Hucksters are worth $125 ;)

Oh, wait!  I see the shipping is $25.

Never mind...

Sure Hucksters are worth $125, but to who? I mean they aren't worth anything if there is no one buying. No bids on them yet. I'd buy them if I was well monied at this point, but I have car repairs and other concerns which take precedence over a second pair of Hucksters

Hucksters are magnificent beasts, but the number of people who would be interested buying a new pair is very small. They are more of a novelty for a collector, than a ski the overwhelming majority of people would be looking to ride. The guy is overestimating the market for those skis. It is very possible that Caucasian Asian and I are the only ones really interested.

I would have been interested if I hadn't been completely turned off by the backstory of that specific pair.

I'd rather buy a pair of  Surfers now.

Maybe cosmic justice will be served and Caucasian Asian will get them for his original offer price after all!

Hope so!  ( If he still wants em! ;-)

Someone bought them for 2 benjamins.

No, they're back up again.  Same price.

I was going to say," There's a sucker born every minute".

I'm guessing he just had a friend "buyrolleyes.gif" them then re-listed them to erase your low ball offer..

New auction listing here..

Someone should report it to Ebay.  They'll cancel his account if enough people complain about shenanigans like that.

Wow, that's at least 5 of us bought them so far.  If we were to all show up at a gathering together rocking these people might think the resort has the coolest rental shop ever!

For those still looking, 7 pair remaining, there were 10 when I pulled the trigger.

So where are you others mounting these? On the line?

Guess it's a state secret.

And now for something completely different...

Are you talking about 192 777s?

I've owned every version of the older(87mm) models, and I had them all mounted on the line.  And I still have a pair.

On the line.    I tried 6 mm back on the 184, made the tails less planky but I wound up hating the slower initiation.

I've since gone down 10 mm in shell size (317->306mm) and I'm not using abducted shells, so I might decide to try it again.

OK, the original Luddite thing was started by a pissed off artisan during the Industrial Revolution who destroyed a couple of inventions that put his friends out of work.  I am a value guy who likes a great bargain, like those bindings I mentioned earlier, but I'm not about to smash in the doors of a local ski shop (I'll gladly pay up if I need or want the service).  Here is another deal keeping in the spirit of value but not necessarily the Luddites: government surplus.  When I find new thermal clothing this cheap that is good enough for America's finest (see link below), I just have to try it out.  The military surplus stuff I've bought before for camping has all worked out well, and that includes modular sleeping systems (fancy name for a sleeping bag that you can zip liners around to make it warmer), duffle bags, mosquito netting, etc.

Yeah, this is more of a post-Arts'n'Crafts GoldenAgeist cheapskate  thread.

Up to the OP, of course, but  1. works and we all know it works  2. ain't likely to be advertised or marketed.  3. almost-no-brainer-cheap    seem to be the rough guidelines.

That ^^^ looks pretty good to me. I would just add...

4) Or at least relatively cheap.  wink.gif

Of course, some people just don't like the idea of being marked down:

That's bordering on Pocket Rocket territory.

Did somebody say...

Salomon Pocket Rocket Skis - Video of skis included - $150 (SF Bay Area)

( Maybe high, but he's been coming down on price almost weekly. ;-)

No-brainer-cheap?

Used 2009 K2 Kung Fujas (189cm) with Salomon 12's - $75 (San Francisco)

Those look like 912s to me - no thanks for $150

Kung Fujas - grab 'em.

Not as good as the 912.

For $75 that's a no-brainer even if he sells the STH 12 OS on fleabay and throws a Pivot on there.

Moot now - called - Fujas have been sold.  :-(

Would be nice to be able to mount but be able to experiment with effective mount point.

This got chewed on a bit a month ago, but I'd like to revisit...

If you have Volant skis with a factory plate, any bindings are going to be installed on that plate (plate is needed for depth and will not be removed). Right?

Has anyone ever installed a Railflex II plate on top of a Volant factory plate?

Has anyone ever installed Quiver Killers (or some other threaded inserts) in a Volant factory plate?

A plate on a plate? Too ridiculous to warrant a response, I guess, so time to move on to the next item...

Last night I got my grubby paws on a pair of 188cm 2004 Dynastar Intuitiv 71's...

Found on CL, someone clearing out his storage shed - $5. Appear lightly used, minor base scratches, edges a little rusty. Nothing an hour in the garage won't take care of. Salomon bindings mounted pretty close to my boot size, just need some minor adjustment, and of course there's a thread here to clue me in.

Really nice looking skis, solid feeling. It will be fun to try em out, hopefully soon.  ;-)
