Funny story about the VERY FIRST Backyard Burton board sign by Jake and given to the Technical Editors of Ski Magazine...
Back in 80’s, Jake Burton met with the editors of Ski magazine to show them his new board. The meeting went fine, nothing exciting for the editors. Before Jake left he gave Seth Mesia, the Equipment Editor, the first production board and signed it “12BUR1-11 Jake for Seth Masia”(see photo). When Jake left the editors looked at each other and said “Who is going to strap their feet to a snowboard and slide down a hill” and laughed. Well a few years later the board was collecting dust in Seth’s office so he was going to throw it out. One of the senior editors, Ed Pitonisk said no you can’t do that and took the board. A couple years later again it was collecting dust and about ready to be in the trash again when Christina Ray. said, “no I will take it.” Then in 1995 Christina got a new job, was cleaning her office out and was throwing out the board and when I came along and said you can’t throw history away and she gave the board to me.
The board is way cool. Yes. . Look who is laughing now! Jake is famous and his boards are some of the best. How much do you think it worth?
