Need help with lenght recommendation for the Head Inferno, can you share your opinion?

I'm still completely unsure of the ski length I should be on these days. Used to race and had 207's for SL, 210 for GS, 213 for Super G...Fast forward several years, I don't race anymore, so I just demo performance skis while on family trips, and I've tried 173 up to 187 with no clear conclusion of what length I should buy.

Currently I'm thinking of buying the Head Inferno but not exactly sure whether the 171 or 181 length is best.

I don't want to work hard, don't want to think about the skis, just want to take it easy everywhere I go. I don't ski at racing speeds anymore, really enjoy cruising, trees at medium speeds, powder, a few bumps, nothing too crazy.

I would never have even considered the 171, but I just demo'd the Head Rock n Roll in 173 and loved 'em.

I'm 6' tall, about 185 lbs.

My thinking is that the extra width of the Inferno over the Rock n Roll will be just a bit better in the deep stuff, and the longer turning radius will make them a little more effort for quick turns, so it's a compromise. Perhaps if I'm more interested in easy turn initiation and not hitting the higher speeds often, the 171 will suffice and be a combo of flotation in pow plus quickness... (Wish they made this ski in a 176 or 178, seems that'd be spot on.)

What do you think?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate the guidance a great deal.

Best,

Dave

I just decided on the Inferno in 181cm, so we'll see how it goes. Can't wait to go skiing again! :)

Have fun on those new skis!

I was told recently the new way to size all-mountain skis is that the bend of the ski tip be right along the bridge of your nose. Thats a general rule. If you don't see a lot of deep powder, but do see a lot of tight trees you way want to be a bit shorter and on the other hand if you ski a lot out west where things are more open you can get away with a bigger ski. My mantra is go big or go home. I'm 6'3" and ski mostly in upper New England. My shortest ski right know is a 180cm. take it for how you see it.

I went with the 181, thinking I'd need the extra flotation in fresh snow, and the extra length still won't be a major detriment in shorter turns on the groomers. Will report back and let you know how it goes.

If the Inferno is anything like the Rock n Roll but just a little better flotation-wise, I think we'll have a winner. :)
