means doing avalanche hazard assessment by digging a snow pit and looking at the snow layers and their relative stability.
We decided to take a place at Winter Park for the month of February this year in part because it was forecast as a La Nina year and we are in New Mexico. Well, now Taos has a lot more coverage than Winter Park and Wolf Creek (not far from the border) is the only place that seems to have real winter conditions anywhere remotely nearby. (we have been blessed to log four 18" to 30" powder days there so far this season.
Needless to say we hope the snow will follow us up to WP. If it starts dumping in February, we will graciously accept offerings of beer, ski gear and cash.
