Been self tuning on & off for a couple of years now. Started off with the Beast (metal housing) edge & base tools & DMT diamond stone set ( black-blue-red-green ) a gummy stone, plastic and metal scrapers and straight up paraffin wax. Did lots of reading here & a few other forums, you tube was great etc etc. Practiced on my old skis, so far I self tuned my old K2's, old volk tiger sharks and now my new nordica tempests. My main area of skiing is the northeast ( Killington is home mountain) , I say this because I see a lot of people leave that out and I think it's important to know where and what type of skiing someone does to tune accordingly. For instance I ski early and late into the season with hard ice usually a factor so I like extremely sharp edges. I've been using 3 degrees on the sides and 1 on the base, seems to give me the grip I like. I am rough as hell on my skis and the edges get beaten hard from all the moguls, rocks and glades.
Anyway here's a few mistakes I think I made in the beginning. I was way too aggressive on the base edge at first with the beast and probably took off too much base edge, now after reading I stay away from the base. I just carefully remove any bad burrs with a diamond stone or gummy and concentrate on the side edges. Another mistake is I used a household iron to wax and a metal scraper to scrape and probably took off too much base material while scraping. I read another thread that black base material coming off in the scapings was due to overheating, so I plan on buying a new iron and using a plastic scraper.
Here's where I am now, I bought a pair of Nordica Tempests, not knowing what the edge comes from the factory, I just used them a few days and took a few burrs off the base and did the edges with the 3 degree beast tool and diamond stones. I'm wondering if I should have filed it to 3 degrees first and then just keep it maintained with the stones. I used a black marker and polished untilit sounded smooth but I'm not sure it's as sharp as it was from the factory. So I'm thinking my mistake was I should have filed it to set it at 3 first OR maybe it's time for a sidewall planer. I'm thinking the sidewall might be preventing the edge from getting sharper so I'm looking for a good recomendation for a sidewall planer.
So my new shopping list is to get a sidewall planer ( recomendations around $50?)
a dedicated iron, plastic scraper and maybe try a new wax
I want to start doing my own p-tex so i'll buy some candles and try using a metal scraper for that
a good set of vices ( maybe the toyo world cup )
maybe start trying a brush on the bases instead of the 3m green scrubbie pads I've been using ( I don't see anyone else doing that so I should probably stop using it ? :)
sorry for the long post but I know there's some experts on here with good experience who can hopefuly help me take this to the next level. NOTHING beats going fast and confident on hard ice while everyone around you is flopping all over the place :)
