Maybe she had little to do with the final article appearing in that stellar icon of jounalism that published it.

It really was more of a slide show.

I'm often amazed at what makes it in ski mags.

Like, "best tacos ever" talking about a restaraunt I wouldn't send anyone to.

This is why Ski Magazine is free.  It is nothing but a monthly circular for ski resorts and ski gear suppliers.

Gee, you can say that again...

That grammar gaff was obviously a spell check/auto correct gone wrong-probably last touched by some intern working for free.  Shame on her for not manually final checking the piece that went out with her name on it.  th_dunno-1[1].gif

Split, that's really true and I can't disagree with much. I make up most of my world. th_dunno-1[1].gif biggrin.gif  the beer is a good idea.beercheer.gif    **

Do have to watch out for athlete idolatry, though. a seductive god.

Thread Starter

Yikes! I started this thread as a little joke to amuse Phil, my ski & car guru. Global warming? Talk about thread hijack. Guess I should have included a smiley face emoticon.

that's not the best part.  In an underground garage a man dressed in an overcoat with a scratchy voice says the whole thing was fixed....by the CIA, from the beginning.  follow the money...it's a faint trail.

If someone didn't want to be bashed on the internet, a profession less public than reporter would solve the problem, or clean up the work.

My RL11s are on their last year. If I come to SH I expect to be served Serrano canapés and a nice Chateaunuef while I'm getting fitted for my next boots.

Now that sounds like a marketing plan.......can we specify a 1990....?smile.gif

that would be a great TV ad. shot starts at chest level, champagne and caviar, sipping and chatting, fine clothing, nods of appreciation, pan down, pan down below table cloth and there's Jim working away on the boots on his stepped bench. haha.

Davluri, I know that your Bad Dave screen persona expects to make virtually any claim, insult virtually anyone ("so gullible"? Because some here think a world champion skier may know something about the tools of her trade?), based on your own proudly tendentious reasoning, and then we're all supposed to think "aww, it's OK, it's just Dave being Dave" after you back down with the little beer hoist emoticon or similar and get genial when someone calls you out. But man, it gets tedious. (Think about the avalanche thread.) Does Bad Dave ever talk to Good Dave, who posts about TC's jackets?

Besides, the mag clearly knows that Start Haus is like the Hollywood sign in Percy Jackson: The gateway to hell. Writer is just protecting her immortal soul...

world champion. give me a break. with the number of subjectively judged events in skiing now, there must be practically hundreds. that's all I'm sayin' .  It's a bias, my opinion.  I think that anyone who assumes great things (gushes) about a skier is gullible, OK. problem with that?

Her skiing is beside the point and nothing I brought up or have reason to consider. I made up an amusing dialogue (not quite a joke) about how much she likely knew about the things that made starthaus a good shop. problem yet?

And her skiing accomplishments are not really part of the post, which was to laugh about Start Haus' rejection, based on her work on the subject. Yes, I was laughing at her work, not her skiing. problem here?

I don't agree with splitter, but I'm not going to take it to the mat, or let it get personal. And if he thinks we have a chance of communicating better in person over a beer, I'm all for it. You have an objection to how I handled that? You know the history there? You think one of us has to win that one? tedious.

I don't mind people calling me out (even when they're wrong), just people being petty. avalanche? faceted. wind buff layer? that it?? old news. tedious. I don't back down, I let it go, there's a difference.

I make any (tendentious) critical statement you disagree with and instead of just discussing the point, it's on to personal attacks. tedious and predictable.

And don't "man" me, dude, it's disrespectful as we have no relationship. see how that works? problem there?

Yes, because of your loaded language. "Gushes" and "gullible" are scarcely applicable to a few people saying (once again, so you can wrap your head around it) that a world class skier tends to know the basics of his or her equipment. You may not agree with that assessment, but it's not "gushing." Nor is suggesting you actually (gasp) watch some of the movies she's in, or learn a bit about her before discounting her skill set ("there must be hundreds"). In fact you set all this in motion with your Bill O'Reilly imitation. Which you keep at; it's ad hominem to suggest that because Splitter's company has some sponsorship with this woman, his argument about her knowledge of tuning machines is suspect. Can you just stick to the argument itself?

Her skiing is beside the point and nothing I brought up or have reason to consider. I made up an amusing dialogue (not quite a joke) about how much she likely knew about the things that made starthaus a good shop. problem yet? Yes, because while you may crack yourself up, it may not have amused everyone else to be called gullible. And in reality, you know zip about whether she is familiar with Start Haus tuning, or even how SH came to be ignored. The whole thread is just a series of speculations, some more realistic than others. So how is it that some are gullible, full of gushing, while yours are, ah, amusing and insightful?

And her skiing accomplishments are not really part of the post, which was to laugh about Start Haus' rejection, based on her work on the subject. Yes, I was laughing at her work, not her skiing. problem here? This is redundant (see your previous para) but again, yes, because in the opinion of some, her skiing accomplishments are integral to that section of the thread. This follows from the reasonable assumption that a elite skier will know something about preparing edges, just as a cabinet maker knows something about saws. You may not accept that assumption (obviously), but that doesn't make everyone else who does foolish. Incidentally, your emphasis on grammar or style to laugh at her just shows more ad hominem thinking. She could be functionally illiterate but that doesn't address why she did or didn't include Start Haus. What seems to particularly bother you is a minor typo that her copy editor should have caught. She's paid to churn out a workable piece that gets picked over and cut and spliced and trimmed. She probably had little to say about a lot of it, perhaps even the choices.

I don't agree with splitter, but I'm not going to take it to the mat, or let it get personal. And if he thinks we have a chance of communicating better in person over a beer, I'm all for it. You have an objection to how I handled that? You know the history there? You think one of us has to win that one? tedious. Can't speak for Splitter, was speaking for your general tendency to get pugnacious/personal and then back off. Obviously now that I've foregrounded this, you're gonna act all tough, at least in front of your computer screen.

I don't mind people calling me out (even when they're wrong), just people being petty. avalanche? faceted. wind buff layer? that it?? old news. tedious. I don't back down, I let it go, there's a difference. I brought up the avalanche thread as an example. There are plenty of others. Curious, do you ever think you should back down because maybe you're been shown wrong? Is criticism of your approach to arguing by definition petty?

I make any (tendentious) critical statement you disagree with and instead of just discussing the point, it's on to personal attacks. tedious and predictable. No point to discuss; this is about you characterizing people you disagree with as gullible. Or more recently, gushing. Your other "points" are your arguments, for better or worse. Tendentious, incidentally, is not a synonym for "critical."

And don't "man" me, dude, it's disrespectful as we have no relationship. see how that works? problem there? The term "man" is simply filler slang. Dating back to the 1940's at least. Does not imply a relationship, or respect or it's lack. "Dude" - which I would not use just because it's best left to 16 year olds - is also just filler slang. Again, if you think these have something to do with respect, you're just dating yourself. Meanwhile you've postured nicely, now why don't you calm down and actually think about how you can put together an argument about skiing without insulting people?

WTF!  I didn't get that!  All I got was a fine beer kept cold in a snow bank out bank ( I did make sure Ziggy didn't pee there) biggrin.gif  Thank god the service, product knowledge and technical skills were exceptional.
