Kids of different abilities

I have three kids - ages 10,8 and 6 and the the 10 and 8 year old can ski together but the six year old can't keep up.  Should I rotate ski school by putting the 10 and 8 year old in a.m. class and 6 year old in p.m. class? Or is there a better way?

Is your idea to that you would ski with the 6yo in the morning, then the older kids in the afternoon?  Are you skiing somewhere that you are comfortable letting the older two ski by themselves for a few runs?  When does the 6yo get too tired to ski in the afternoons?

Yes I was thinking of skiing with 6yo in the morning and older kids in the afternoon.  I don't think I am comfortable yet with the older two skiing by themselves, but should it be just about mountain size?  So far none of them get tired and I have to drag them off the mountain, even in a day when it rained in the afternoon.

The reason I asked about mountain size is not because of the skiing, but about how far away the kids can end up from you if they are on their own.  Our home mountain is 70 acres . . . total . . . so plenty of 8-10 year olds are skiing with a buddy or sitting at the lodge while their parent(s) are elsewhere.  Usually these are kids who have skied at the area since they were 5 or 6.  Only one ski lodge.  In contrast, another local mountain is not much bigger, 120 acres, but has separate areas and more than one building.  So there I skied with my DD even if we also brought along a ski buddy.

Seems like the 6yo would get a big kick out of having some special time while the older kids are in ski school.

Also makes a difference if a 10yo has a cell phone or not.  Assuming cell coverage is good on a mountain.

Call me cynical, but why not put the 6 year old in ski school and keep the others out of ski school?  That way, their abilities will converge much faster.  This assumes, of course, that ski school teaches kids faster than free skiing, with or without parents.

Given the way children develop, the 6 year old is probably just on the cusp of "getting it" and will keep up with the siblings soon enough no matter what you do or don't do.

That definitely crossed my mind!  Might try it for a day or two and see if their abilities converge a bit.

Might try this for a short bit, say a couple of runs and see how it goes.

Is the 6yo a boy or a girl?  How competitive with older siblings?

The two older ones are competitive and they are all girls.

Seems like you have plenty of good options.  How about seeing what the 6yo wants to do and follow her lead if she has an opinion since it sounds like she is the one who could use extra encouragement to get to the next level.  My DD did more when in ski school than just skiing with me because she is very social.  No siblings.  Even now that she can keep up with me, she'd rather ski with a friend.  Meaning that she'll ski all day with a friend, but is ready to do something else after a few hours if only skiing with me.  Note that I'm her mom, not her dad.

Abu al Banat. Bless you sir, and good luck. Alternate time, and ski with them all, as long as they'll tolerate you.
