Head Titans or Magnums?

Hi guys,

I was up at Seven Springs today and I had to chance to demo a pair of 2012 Magnums in 170cm length, and I absolutely loved them. However, I didn't get the chance to demo the Titans because I was not comfortable with the length (177).

I started skiing last year and I've been on a pair of K2 Shockwaves in 163 with Lange RS110 boots. I've been perfectly fine with this setup but after demoing the Magnums today and going back to my Shockwaves I realized how unstable they are at high speed as well as the fact that they do not like to turn on the faster blacks.

My birthday is coming up and I was thinking about asking for new skis but I can't decide between the Titans and the Magnums. I like the fact that the Titans are wider especially since I'm usually skiing in the east coast crud, and the extra width would be useful if I end up moving to LA next year and start skiing at Mammoth. However, are they as quick edge to edge as the Magnums are? How different are the two?

I'm 5'10 140

Thanks!

Dude I got to ski my 163 Titans today and I gotta say, they are insanely fast edge to edge.  It's almost scary how fast they want to turn (12.4m radius @ 163!).  I wish I had gotten the 170 now, since the 163 is almost too "twitchy".

Everything I've read says almost no carving difference was noted between the Magnums and Titans.  Neither will give you spectacular float, but the Titans are at least a little closer to handling soft snow at 78 under foot.  Energetic and fast is an understatement for these skis.

Best of luck.

Thanks FB, I've pretty much decided on the Titans at this point, it seems like everyone that has them loves them. Plus I'd rather have the extra versatility if there's no loss in performance.

I'm skiing on 163s now, and I can definitely see where the extra length would come in handy. I'm trying to decide between the 170s and 177s myself, I'm just worried that the 177s would be too much ski for me, especially since I'm fairly light.

At your weight, the 170 is definitely the better choice.

I've skied both the Magnum and the Titan extensively (probably 75+ days on each model), and I really don't think you give up very much quickness in the Titan vs the Magnum.  Both are great skis, but the Titan is probably a notch better for the conditions you describe.

Bob providing good advice . I have the Titan in 177 cm , I'm 6 ft. 168 lbs. The 170 would have been fine for me I'm sure, probably a better choice too.  Its a real fun ski, but IMHO a lot of ski too. I don't think you'll feel the 170 isn't enough ski.

Thanks for the advice Bob and RT, it sounds like the Titan at 170 is perfect for me. icon14.gif

Yup. The 177's will be beastly things for you at your weight. Enjoy them for what they are. Nothing but raves from everyone out our way who skis them. It's also a favorite teaching ski as well.
