Question about ski mitts

Thread Starter

So I finally splurged and got a pair of Black Diamond Mercury Mitts (actually had hubby buy them for me for xmas). My hands are always cold and I was in need of some new mittens. I used them for the first time when taking my kids sledding the other day. Temps were in the low 20's F but with the wind chill it felt about 7 F. I was only out about 1 hour (and not moving much - mostly just watching the kids) but my hands were so cold. I did have to take off my mitts several times to help the kids with their stuff. None of the kids complained and none had near the gear that I did have on to keep warm. Luckily I ordered these mitts from backcountry (got a great price) so I know I can return if I am not happy with them. Now I am wondering if I wore them correctly (had the wrist part over the jacket rather than under like I typically worn other mitts). Or maybe it was just b/c I was standing around or had to remove them several times. I may not have a lot of really cold weather to test them out again before our ski trip so I am looking for some advice.

Two suggestions:

1. Glove liners (help when you have to take the mitts off)

2. Hand warmers (they work MUCH better in mitts)

While I own a pair of Mercury Mitts, I can seldom wear them because they make my hands sweat so badly! It has to be REALLY COLD!!!

If you have to take the mitts on and off you really should wear a thin glove liner. Also, were your hands the only thing that was cold? If your core is not warm nothing else will be either. Hat? Warm boots?

  1. Did you have your torso and head insulated enough?
  2. Do you have Raynaud's?
