Is it time for a new liner or new boot?

I've had a custom surefoot boot for about 5 years.  I was desperate back then (I was literally crying on the slopes from foot pain) so I slapped the $$$ for the whole surefoot package.  I don't regret it as I've had years of good skiing out of them.  Back then I was probably a level 3 skier if even and now I'm level 7-8.  I love these boots but noticed this year that I've had to really buckle it up much tighter than usual to get the right performance.   I'm also running out of buckle rungs to tighten the boot.  Is it time to level up from my 80 flex beginner boots or can I get away with just replacing my packed out liner?  If just replacing the liner, I was thinking of trying the zipfits instead of going to surefoot again just to save some $.  Any suggestions?

Hi EastCoastChick,

Before you splurge on a new liner, do a "shell check" as recommended in the WIKI "Which boot should work for me", at the top of "Ask the boot guy's".  Pay close attention to how much space is open between your heel and the shell when your toes are just touching the front(no more than 15mm).

thanks mike.  I don't really think it's a length issue as the boot has been ok in the past years.  This year it just seems that I have been needing to buckle the ankle and top cuff a lot tighter.  I'm not sure if it's because the liner has packed out, the boot has softened or I'm just skiing a lot more aggressive.  Probably a combination of all three.  I'm also pretty sure I've lost a good 1/2 inch in my calf in the last year so that might just be it too.  Maybe I should try a Booster strap? or maybe I should just go to a boot fitter.  I'd rather have a good idea of what I need so that I don't just get sold something I don't really need.

do a shell fit and let us know  (its easy, and will help us, help you)

also the fit might have been what you needed then, but as you got better, you neeed more out of the boot, and it can't preform to what you want to do now?

the shell will not get much softer over time, but the liner will pack out a bit.
