I will be heading west soon for the 2012 edition of our ANNUAL FATHER AND SON NINJA SKI MISSON FROM GOD.
Baz Jr. and I expect to arrive in the Vail area on Jan. 7th, then ski together until he leaves on the 15th. Jr., (now 18 years old,) and I know our way around Vail pretty well, and would be more than happy to show any newcomers around. We are of course always open to exploring and learning from more seasoned souls.
My buddy FairToMiddlin’ will arrive late on the 17th, and ski with me, (poor soul,) through the 20th or 21st. We’ll have wheels, so forays to other I70 areas are not out of the realm of possibility, but we’re cheap, have Epic Passes, and may have to pass on non-VR areas, but are always open to suggestion.
I head over to Steamboat on the 22nd, and will ski through the 27th. I’ll be there with a large mob of southerners as this is the annual gathering of the Florida Ski Council. I’m a much bigger fish in Florida ski circles than I am here on Epic, so have got two days of cat herding responsibility that I’ve promised the trip leaders. I usually get assigned to lead tours for people who prefer blue and easier black terrain, so expect those days to be a bit less exciting and slower paced than some of you might care for. It’s all good to me though. You’re welcome to hang for as long as you like.
It’s been a few seasons since I last visited Steamboat, and believe that I’m a much stronger, more confident, and capable skier than I was then. I know my way around a bit, remember some of my favorite spots, and when all else fails, can read a map. However, I’m not at all familiar with the hike-to terrain like Christmas Tree Bowl, The No Names, and such, and think that I’ve evolved enough to give them a whirl. Any local or visiting Bears who care to show me around a bit may find that I’m not quite as cheap as I implied above, especially at happy hour, if you’ve not left me broken and bleeding on a desolate mountain side.
