Looking to pick up my first set of skis... (Head XRC PP9)

Hi, I am 31 years old, I used to ski frequently in highschool and stopped for 12 years. I picked it up again last year and was back in love. After my first trip out last year I went out and got fitted for my own boots. This year I am looking to pick up my first set of skis.

I would classify myself as a lower intermediate skiier.  I can ski greens, blues, and most blacks. I am looking to try and get into the moguls at some point this season. But I mostly want to concentrate on getting more comfortable on all the trails. I am 6'1" and currently around 220 but am dropping down to just under 200.

One of the skis I am looking at is the Head XRC PP9 (the level nine sports exclusive) Any thoughts on this ski?

The other skis I have been looking at are

Blizzard Magnum 7.4

Atomic Smoke

Elan Waveflex 8

Any thoughts?

Thank you for all your help!

I forgot to mention I ski almost exclusively on the east coast.

Also, any big benefits to buying at a local shop, over purchasing online?

I would say buy online if you know exactly what you want and what size.  I dealt with a local ski shop the other day and asked them, "Hey do you have the plug that hot forms my Technica Vento 8's?".  Their reply was, "Take them to the place where you bought them".  They did not say that they whether or not they had the plug.  I then followed up my first question with "Is there some sort of special technique required to perform this task?"  Their reply was the same.  So, I will NEVER purchase anything from that local shop due to that initial impression.

Thanks for the response.  I will probably end up ordering online because of the Head XRC PP9 being such a great deal. If I were to get a non-exclusive ski I would think about going local if it were close the same price.

For example if I go with Atomic Smoke skis I have found them to be about the same price online as my local shop.  So why not buy from the local guy in that case.

I am just trying to find some advice on these Head XRCs since I can only get them online I wish I found someone that had skiied them.

I would be getting them in a 170cm ski since that is the largest size and the rep said it would be a good fit for me.

But I was hoping for some additional input.

Thank you! I have been searching for reviews of this ski online and it is very hard to find.  I ended up buying a different ski the Elan Waveflex 8.  But please respond, I would love to hear someones impression.

Perhaps one of the reasons you didn't get many replies is because your title was specific to the Head XRC PP9

I'm not sure what kind of feedback you may get on the Head.  Maybe this bump will get you some feedback.

In the mean time, you may want to demo if you get a chance, and add the Rossignol Experience 78 to your demo list as well as the Blizzard Magnum 8.1.

Trekchick,

First, thanks for the response. As far as the thread title I did think of that after posting it however, I didn't want to upset the regulars by posting the same question twice since I couldn't edit the original title.  I have been a regular on message boards before and I have seen how that can go.

After talking to a bunch of people and doing a ton of research I ended up purchasing a pair of Elan Waveflex 8. I actually had two sales people both try to sell me the ski after I had already purchased it online at a steal of a deal. I got the 2011 model, from skis.com on their after Christmas sale. Most people I have talked to think it will be a good ski for 3-4 seasons while I am progressing.  After that hopefully I will be ready for a more advanced ski.

Now I just need to start doing research on ski maintenance.  Figuring out how often to wax, what type of waxing is best for the ski. Belt waxing, hot waxing, hand waxing, a mix of the three???

oh and far as demoing, that was my original thought.  However, due to the unseasonably warm temperatures all the demo days in the region have been cancelled :(

Kinda sucks that the demo days have been cancelled.  Hopefully some ski shops  will (eventually) have demos for you to try.

For something with the waist width and properties you're looking for in a ski, you really can't go wrong with the Blizzard Magnum 7.6, or the Atomic Smoke.

Have you considered the Rossignol Experience 78, or the Fischer Progressor 900?  Both of those reviewed really well with some of the bears who went to early demos, ranked right up there with Kastle MX78 and Blizzard Magnum 7.6.

hmm I responded twice, one apparently went for moderation and still hasn't been posted.

But basically I did end up purchashing a set of skis at a steal of a deal, 2011 Elan Waveflex 8s. Hopefully the more indepth post, with the thank you, will eventually come through.
