Get well soon :| and safe skiing everyone else.
WOW! I am really touched by all of your support and well-wishes. I am really floored. Yes, this is an amazing community
Much thanks to Greg who has been a great friend and huge help. Mrs. Finn is here and we're doing OK, I really appreciate all the offers for help. Just hanging out in the house for a while. If I have to be laid up, this is a great place to do it in.
OK, so the details: I was skiing down from the the T-head to the Storm Peak lift. I was just making some med radius turns in the pushed off snow along the side, Turning left to right my inside edge grabbed something very hard and just launched me forward over my right boot. I slammed down and my shoulder popped out, I got it back in. I didn't feel any popping in my knee, more pain from my lower leg. I tried to get up and thats when I realized there was nothing holding my leg up. "Mike and Dana" from the patrol came over to help with Greg. I finally agreed to get sledded down. They were awesome! I will have to drop off a case of beer or two. Getting into the sled, My shoulder came out again but I got it back in.
So, fully detached Right ACL, and I also sprained my ankle. Not sure how all that happened. Good news is I am left handed! I am able to type and use my right hand this AM so I am confident I will get the shoulder back in a couple of weeks. Gotta get a surgeon ASAP.
Mike, I was thinking about you yesterday and J-hole
Skis: on My Bone's with FKS 14, Ironically, I just had them tested earlier last week so I know they were all set up correctly.
NO! the DPS's are not for sale, I am thankful I got 4 days in including one with enough powder to use the DPS's.
Wait, you left out the most important detail: how injured is your ski??? Blown sidewall, or, horrors, compressed edge??
What crappy news -- however, if it does start snowing and you turn out to be the season's sacrifice, we need to take up a collection around here as a thank you gift. :-)
skis are just fine! i sense the gathering vultures looking for that last minute christmas present.......
if my ruination means more snow for you all, consider it my gift
i will post my wish list on starthaus.com..
Sorry to hear of your plight, sport. I guess the good news is you did it playing in the snow at Steamboat and not slipping on the ice going out for the mail in NJ. Haven't had a chance yet to try out those cool green pants I got from you but I'm going on a 3 week powder safari to the PNW next month and I send you a TR. BTW, your incident has given me the impetus I needed to start getting in shape for the trip.
The one and only Finndog took an odd tumble today skiing from Thunderhead down to the Storm Peak Express and ended up taking a ride on the sled. Unfortunately, blown ACL and dislocated shoulder. He's propped up on a chair in his house in Steamboat probably sleeping by now. Kudos to the Steamboat Ski Patrol and the Yampa Valley Medical Center for some top notch care.
Aww damn it Ron, I would have settled for what you got me last year this is a bit over the top mang. Heal well
++++++++++ vibes +++++++++++++
BTW, and this is no joke, if I'm around and you'd care to do a bit of rehab in sunnier climes, you and Mrs. Dog are welcome to stay with us for a while. Got a 1st floor room we can put a bed into that you can use, a small SUV to haul you around in, and all sorts of good karma to share.
What a bummer, heal up! If you can swing the surgery in Steamboat, Verploeg and Sisk are both top notch. Can't speak from personal experience (knock on wood) but they've put back together many friends' knees.
They are absolutely bad luck, evil, possessed skis. You should send them to me and I will perform an exorcism on themI know our BSLs close enough to avoid remounts.
Sorry to hear about your injuries....Heal fast and better; in fact, you need to come on down to the southern climes to replenish up on some good healing soul food down here!
Gee whiz! What the heck could you have hit on the side of a groomer that would cause you to take a digger like that? I thought the Bonafides could crush anything in their path?! Apparently, frozen death cookies is not on the list. Either that or somebody forgot to trim a tree stump??? How fast were you going?
So sorry to hear this. being broken is never good at any point in the season.
You really did not have to make this sacrifice for the snow. Seriously you didn't need to do this; doubt that you are a virgin either.
I know this doesn't really buffer any of the short-term bummed-out-ness, but FWIW I have a ski buddy who in the last two years has gone through a bad medical patch that included a severe set of injuries from a crash in 2010 - in the hospital for 10 days or something - followed by hip replacement this past spring. We skied together last weekend and he is more cheerful and more into his turns than ever before. Point is, others have come out the other side and so will you, in less time than it looks like at the moment. Meanwhile, once you can hobble again, I've found that a total down-to-the-last-bearing bike overhaul can be therapeutic.
Sorry to learn of your injury and hope you will return to the slopes even stronger. I'm heading to Steamboat 2/4-11 and had hoped to share some turns. Guess I'll have to return next season.
