Old school bamboo poles - what finish?

Does anyone know what type of varnish Trak or Liljedahl might have used on their bamboo poles back in the day?

It was probably a traditional spar varnish. The type typically used in the marine industry. Todays equivalent would be something like Z-Spar Captains Varnish.

You could ask skithepnw, he was making new bamboo poles a couple seasons ago. Not sure what happened with his effort. They were pretty sweet looking. I'm sure he knows how to finish bamboo though.

I'm betting you're right; I was, however, thinking of staying away from modern 'spar' polyurethanes, so I was looking at phenolic/alkyd blends like Pettit's  Captain's 1015:  http://www.pettitpaint.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=61  , which is exactly what you pointed to

Thanks, Sinecure.

If you have any questions about applying varnish, ask away. It's what I do in my day job. I paint, varnish and do fiberglass repairs in a boatyard.
