Purgatory and Silverton Mountain

First post here - great site!  Glad I found it...

Had a couple questions re: Purgatory and Silverton -

First - what type of base does Purgatory typically need in order to be 100% open?  Seems like a decent base for mid-Dec right now, yet it's only 33% open.

Silverton - planning on hitting it for a day right after Christmas.  First time to go.  Not doubting ability at all, but wondering if a guide would be worth it for a first timer on the mountain.  Leaning that way right now, just to get a lay of the land, but don't want to waste my money if folks don't think it necessary.

Thanks in advance!

The 42" Purg is claiming is suspect, IMO. Yesterday in the trees, I measured 30" and change. A couple of the front side blacks (Stykx & Lower Hades) still have plenty of brush making for an interesting slalom course. It was could quality snow, however and the rumor mill says 3 and 8 on the back will open Saturday which ought to more than double the terrain. The steeps and trees need at least a couple more feet to minimize hazards.

Regarding Silverton, are you asking about a private guide or a guided group?

I thought Purgatory changed its name to "Durango Mountain Resort"?

Thanks!  Good info on Purgatory.

Would go with a guided group at Silverton (don't want to spend the big $$ for the private route).

They tried too, but nobody would let them. It's 'officially' Purgatory @ Durango Mountain Resort now:

It's Purg, Purgatory or DMR to locals and past visitors, depending on their history and timing with the area.
