Massanutten is in northern VA, 15 miles off I-81 near Harrisonburg. 300 miles from Charlotte, all interstate highway. For me, it's 4 hours from my house in the Triangle with no worries about rush hour traffic, via Hillsborough, Danville, Lynchburg.
Mnut is celebrating it's 40th anniversary as a southeast ski area this winter. It's a little mountain but bottom line for me is that Lift 6 at the top never has a lift line, even on holiday weekends. All runs are lit so late afternoon and night skiing on the black runs is possible, unlike at Wintergreen. They've replaced all the original slow double chairs. Three quads (two with conveyor loading to help beginners), and a triple put in for Lift 5 this summer. Only Diamond Jim is open for Lift 6, but Showtime off Lift 5 is a nice run that's reasonably steep above mid-station. In fact, Upper Showtime was better last weekend since DJ got icy at the top and had racing in the morning.

Here are some pics from Jan 2011 when the entire mountain was open.

I discovered Mnut when my daughter was two. She's 11 and we've been going regularly since she started skiing at age 4. The ski school is very good. The bonus for her is that Mnut has an indoor waterpark. Added outdoor ice skating this winter. So plenty to do if the skiing isn't the best. That was important before Christmas last month. We did get in two days on the snow before the rain pretty much shut things down for the ski hill.
As you can tell, I like the place.
