Smuggler's in January

Hi,

Planning a trip to Smugg's in January, was just wondering about snowfall there.

I am looking at either the 1st weekend (6th) or 3rd weekend. Historically speaking, am I better off waiting that couple of weeks for a better chance of snowy conditions? I'm itching to do it sooner, but if 2 weeks really could make a difference, I'll wait.

Thanks in advance!

I would say wait a few more weeks. The season is starting off real slow this year.

I am not a fan of Smugglers Notch.  Primitive lifts and its 40 minutes farther than Stowe.  Just go to Stowe, better town, better food, better skiing.  SM markets itself as the place for families, pretty much every decent size resort has excellent programs for kids these days.

If you're bringing kids, you won't find a better program.  There is terrain to satisfy every ability. But, yes the lifts are slow.  You can't have everything.

EC ski planning is always a gamble.  You could wait the extra 2 weeks and it could rain for 3 days straight. You never really know.

If you need to book this trip in advance then try to wait, if you can stay flexible with your schedule just see what's happening and go early if it's good. Your chances are much better in later Jan through early April.

I went to Smuggs in early January last year and before the trip it looked like they were going to have almost nothing open and then they got hit with a big snow fall the week before I left and 3 feet while I was there, so almost everything was open.  I haven't been to Stowe so I can't compare, but the terrain at Smuggs covered everything you would want.  The lifts are slow, but then the lift tickets are inexpensive compared to Stowe.

just better coverage. Right now there is basically no natural base. you need about 30-40 inches for decent off piste skiing in this area.

better skiing is subjective Smuggs has alot of flaws but its skiing is not one of them. Its steep raw, tons of tree, nice cliffs, and noone skis there so powder stays.

Um, you may be making too many assumptions here about the center of the universe. Maybe the OP is from Montreal, eh?

well, I had picked 3rd w/e in Jan  ... even that may not be the best given how things are going.
