Considering the 2011 Blizzard Men's Magnum 7.6 Iq Skis With Tp12 Bindings - any thoughts???

Hello all.  Just joined and first post for me though I've read from afar for some time.

I'm getting back into the swing of things after a long hiatus.  A little about me:  44 yrs old, 5'10", 230 (though I'm losing weight - no really!), former ski racer (GS) and instructor (certified at 17 yrs old).

I got back out on skis last year for the first time in nearly 12 years, and surprisingly I'm still pretty good.  I live in MD and primarily ski the East, with my most frequent trips being to Snowshoe and Timberline resorts.

Both my young daughters are gaining interest in the sport and I'm purchasing equipment for us all this year.  I want a ski I can push a little from time to time, mostly on the groomers, but one that's forgiving enough to be on all day.  I've narrowed down to a couple of selections, but I'm trying to balance performance with $, especially since I'll be lucky to get 3 or 4 full weekends in on an annual basis.  I've honed in primarily on the Blizzard Men's Magnum 7.6 Iq Skis With Tp12 Bindings 11 and would like to know if any of you have an opinion.

Last year I demo'd the Volkl AC 30's and loved them, and I'm told (by many) that these would be a great fit as well.  I can buy them for around $499.

I was also told to check out the Atomic Smoke Ti's, and I've always been a fan of K2 products as well.  I'm open for any comments and suggestions and thank you all in advance for your advice.

Welcome to Epic and welcome back to skiing.  My advice, and that of many others here also, is forget skis until you visit an experienced and qualified bootfitter and get boots that actually fit your feet.  Boots are the most important tool there is for skiing.  Without boots that fit correctly you can't communicate to the ski what you want to do, but since you were a racer and instructor you should know all that.  This is just a prod in that direction.  Boots first, skis second.

Thanks, mtcyclist.  I appreciate your comment and agree.  Yes, I do understand the importance of correct fitting boots and how crucial they are to proper skiing.  That being the case, any responses with respect to skis should take into consideration that I will, in fact, have boots that fit properly!

I have the AC30 as my all mountain eastern ski and love it.  At $499 (new?) it is a very good deal.  I work at a shop and paid more two years ago.  I love it for anything but deep snow, but since we generally don't get very deep around here they are about perfect for me.

I have also skied the Blizz 7.6 and it was a fun ski.  A bit more forgiving than the AC30 not that the 30 is demanding. It just feels lighter underfoot and quicker edge to edge due to being a bit narrower underfoot.

If you are sticking totally to the groomed, go 7.6 if you want to explore a bit, that deal on the AC30's would be hard to pass up.

Good luck,

Rick G
