Dec 1 Vail- 500 acres open on the front. Snow surface not great, maybe not even good. Hard as a rock, (that's OK), but we even have some rocks and stones kicked up by the groomers and God Forbid even dirt showing through the groomer tracks in spots at Mid Vail.
Hey , we're skiing Stop complaining and enjoy. End of last year's tune , pretty trashed after skiing today.
Dec 2- Beaver Creek. Although we stay at Avon almost never ski Beaver, but go today thinking the snow might be holding up a little better with less traffic. World Cup in town over on Birds of Prey. Blue square groomer Latigo open with good cover, but again pretty firm and slick for sure. Some of the Ski Team members making some warm up runs and these guys are awesome and the slick surface is a moot point for them. Very humbling when you think you're "cooking" coming down the hill and one of the Ski Team guys moves on through carrying a backpacck in one arm and a pair of skis on their shoulder and weaves by leaving you far behind very quickly! Its like 150 HP car chasing a 500 HP car maybe.
Ski over to the bottom of the DH in time to see Bodie come across the finish line and post the fastest run which holds up. he knew he nailed it at the finish as he gestured to the crowd with a low fist pump. Really cool experience and our timing was excellent to get there in time to see this. Highlight of the day for sure. Grab some lunch at the Spruce Saddle. Actually I ate an apple and my buddy for $13.50 has the prime rib and it looks like a restaurant portion and I'm told its delicious. Definitely could be split and at a couple of dollars more than a burger well worth getting instead. Ski maybe 5 more Latigos and its really getting congested on the hill and I'm thinking leave well enough alone and call it a day at about 2 PM. Skied less than we would have liked but too many bodies on the limited terrain.
Dec 3 Vail- Snowed a couple inches over night (Thank God) and snows a bit during the day.. These couple of inches make a huge difference and the skiing is much better. Northwoods chair opens and we have a very enjoybale day and ski 9-3 and make a lot of runs. Things looking better.
Dec 4 Vail - Wake up to alot more snow. report says 9 in. in the last 24 hours. Head back to Vail . Make first two runs down Expresso and its above the boot mid shin. Fantastic , from boiler plate to powder in two days. Have a blast . Top of Riva opens up , but we don't see this till after lunch. Riva closed before Tourist Trap and you have to take long cat walk around to bottom of Prima.
Snow cover looks excellent actually down the next setion of Riva to the top of Tourist Trap where you could catch the cat walk again but the partol has it roped off.
Ski till a little after 3 and feel very fortunate that we had great conditions on our last day. Forecast the rest of the week unfortunately is real cold and clear.
I've skied Vail in past years about this early and this year they were struggling until Sat's snow . Maybe it was better when they first opened, but I think in the early going it has to snow at least every couple of days or it gets thin and bullet proof pretty quick. I expected Riva with the snow making window to open quicker but have no idea what snow making and terrain priority the mountain makes. I love Vail and all things considered believe they do their best to deliver the best product they can. It was great to be skiing again. Did a ton of running and weights all year and still my legs felt like rebar after the first day. My buddy got fitted with the new Fischer Vacumns and got to ski them the last day. He had pinching at both ankles and the fitter didn't reheat the boots again but instead did a cold press for him (what ever that is). We'll be back sometime next month and he can get them tweaked again if he needs too.Hopefully when we get back in probably 6 weeks there's another 80-100 in. of snow that has fallen.
Hoping the local hill can get going here in SW Pa. The earlier long range winter forecast has been 1000% wrong. Its too warm and rainy.
