Urban skiing - 6 " of pow on freshly cut grass

My first skiing of the season since 4th of July at Whistler. I went down to the neighborhood lake and park (Omaha, NE). Powder was perfect -- too bad I didn't have a couple thousand feet of vertical. smile.gif  Had to dodge some playground equipment. Made 5 runs but tired of climbing the hill - must have been the altitude!

perhaps you needed skins to ease the climb.  If it was really steep, you could've used some ski crampons.  But you'd want to make sure you were fully equiped with an airbag, transceiver, shovel, and probe -- perhaps an ice axe as well?  Then again, that might've been too much weight.

Good to get after it!

Risky, yes, but it was calling my name. I believe I have the first ascent/descent.

Just glad I didn't fall in a tree well.

Oh - gaper boy is there, isn't he. He's kind of like the Great Gazoo on the Flintstones...always hanging around.

Oh yeah, you do what you can. My friends own Mt. Crescent ski area outside of Omaha, so they let me ski for free (plus I give them a lot of free graphic work). Small by mountain standards, but I ski 3 or 4 days a week during their season. They have been pumping a lot of money into the place lately.  Also I have a Breck season pass (guess I could also use at Keystone and A-Bay, but we have a timeshare in Breck).

Don't know if you remember Nebraski (formerly Trailridge) between Lincoln and Omaha right off the Interstate (kind of like Buck Hill). I think that closed about 10 years ago.

Anyway, if you drive through Omaha and see someone making their own snow it is probably me.

Ha - I love this photo of our house one of my friends came across -- may have been on Bing maps?

Even fewer can say that they have skied Mississippi (from Feb. 2010):

As my daughter suggests, I'm showing this to both the "Colorado people" and "our friends."

Before I watch this, are you at Chestnut Mountain? That place is impressive for the Midwest - plus if you get in a tuck and don't slow down you'll end up in the Mississippi.

You're as big a nut as I am!   I've skied the back yard -- not bold enough to ski the front.

Oh, and I just noticed you said "Mississippi", not "the Mississippi" .  Even more impressive!

The backyard wasn't even my best skiing that day.  That occurred on a highway embankment - had to have been at least 90 vertical feet.  wink.gif

And yep, the vid was right here in the heart of the deep south.  They reported about 8" that day, a record in my 38 year life time.

Wow, lots of people skiing in non skiing places! If I was closer to crescent I would be game for a get together, but I moved to Wyoming for school, and skiing. Never got the chance to see Nebraski, I hear Pleasanton has a ski and golf club, and a rope tow, I think thats the only one left. Id love to ski the hills by Lake Mcconaghy after a big dump, or even the dam itself. Love the pic Midwest, pretty impressive snow patch! cliffk, you win.

Whenever we have a big storm, and I haven't been skiing for awhile, I go out and ski my uphill neighbors side yard, my front yard, and my downhill neighbors yard.  It isn't really steep enough, so I have to make sure to keep moving.  Sometimes I have to make a track and stay in it on the rolls to avoid getting bogged down.

The other challenge is getting across my driveway without scraping my edges, if I've already cleared it earlier in the storm (keep a very flat ski).

Got my first taste of skiing about 30 years ago at Mt. Crescent.  I still remember a lot of details about that day.  If can remember correctly the was a pommel lift were the quad chair is shown on the current trial map.

BTW I'm sure I looked pretty awesome skiing with my jeans tucked into my boots that day!

That's where I learned to ski in the mid 70s -- it was a birthday present from my parents. On that visit they only had the poma lift and a rope tow. Later a T-bar was added, then a double replaced the rope, and then a quad replaced the poma.

Hey, I should be an ambassador to the place!  My Dad use to tease me way back that I should have stock in the area.

Mt. Crescent opens Saturday. It's been cold and snowy the past week. Look'n out my window here at work the snow is coming down pretty good!

Crescent web cam as of this morning. Looks pretty good - opening day is tomorrow. I'm headed out now to search out some more spots in the neighborhood to ski.

I was supposed to be in Alaska right now for a meeting so I was going to ski Alyeska, but now the meeting has been bumped back (of course) so I'll ski what I can find close to home. I want to be like Glen Plake -- travel around the country skiing every place I can find -- doesn't matter if it is big or small.

Went snowshoeing for a few hours this morning. Spent a lot of time on the lake -- pretty cool -- it was like ICE ROAD TRUCKERS - every once in a while I would hear this spreading cracking noise.

Sorry Utah and East Coast, you might have to head to Iowa for some powder.  I had lift served powder skiing today -- it was awesome!

Mt. Crescent, Iowa - 15 minutes from Omaha.

Yep - definitely cool! Reminds me of the Jonny Mosely Playstation game from 10 years ago where you have the option of skiing in the city, jumping off bridges, etc...
