I am an avid skier and now have a boyfriend who is ready and willing to give skiing a try. He is an athlete (lots of cycling, rugby, and soccer), but has not skied much, other than a few times when he was a kid. He is 6'4" and weighs 210. He has an unusually large foot - size 14 street shoe and size 31.5 ski boot. His foot is also narrow.
We went to a local boot shop and tried on several boots, but their stock was limited at that upper size of 31.5. The one boot that seemed to feel right on his foot was the Atomic Hawx series boot, but they only had a 120 version, which we both think is overkill and too expensive for what he needs at least right now.
My question is what is the real difference between the 80, 90, 100, and 120 models of this boot? Is it flex? Is it marketing? We are now considering doing an online order for one of the lower models, but we don't want to buy a boot that he will quickly outgrow in terms of performance if he decides he likes skiing as much as I do.
