I am in Bozeman for the weekend but the snowpack is still sparse at Big Sky. I need an opinion on driving to Red Lodge (14 " day before yesterday) or heading down to Jackson Hole.
Thanks

Don't know about conditions right now at Red Lodge. However years ago skiing early should never be done on your own skis. Very rocky. I don't remember the base when I was there but it wasn't enough.
The Bozeman locals head to Grand Targhee this time of year if local conditions suck. It usually has the best early season coverage in the Northern Rockies.
Skied Red Lodge Mountain today. Conditions are awesome - especially considering for early season, and they got another 7+" inches. Plus they're opening some new terrain on Saturday. Should be plenty of fresh tracks to be had.
What Rio said..
Right now the conditions at Red Lodge are fantastic. I've been skiing there for 12 years and don't have a special pair of skis for early in the season and Friday and Sunday my Icelantic Shamans got put to good use in the trees, in the powder and on the groomers and with no worries at all that I was going to damage them.
Send some of your snow up here! haha
