Will have to wait and see... something seems to have leaked. I've found some information about HD3 camera in 3 flavors... but they might all be rumors, it's nice to have new stuff coming in! Will keep us users with options to go...

The HD Hero 3 is a huge step ahead of the HD Hero 2. People are going to love these cameras. We will offer three models; the HD Hero 3 White Edition, Silver Edition and Black Edition. We will have three price points, and all three models have WiFi Built into them. They all share a new form factor which is the same rectangular shape (which lends itself to be mounted anywhere, including the Chest), but it's much thinner than the HD1/ HD2. The HD Hero 3 + Backpack is the size of todays camera by itself. All three models will come shipped with the new housing which incorporates an underwater lens into the housing and an improved locking latch. The camera needs to work as well under the water as above the water since it's waterproof. We did have to go to the Micro SD Card format since SD Card Trays are way to big for this camera. There are ton of other improvements; I'll send out a Camera Comparison Sheet once we have that and are allowed to send images.

Camera Line Up:

HD Hero 3 White Edition - $199 Retail. This is basically an HD Hero 1 Camera (5mp photo sensor, etc.) that includes WiFi, dive lens and the new, thinner form factor. Available 10/21/12 to ship.

1080/30, 960/30, 720/60 5MP Photo 3 shots 1 second photo burst WiFi Built in Improved Housing (locking latch / dive lens)

HD Hero 3 Silver Edition - $299 Retail. This is your HD Hero 2 camera with WiFi built in, new form factor and improved housing. Available 10/21/12 to ship.

1080/30, 960/48, 720/60 11MP Photo 10 shots 1 second photo burst WiFi Built in Advanced Features / Capture (Protune and White Balance) Improved Housing (locking latch / dive lens)

HD Hero 3 Black Edition - $399 Retail. This is brand new technology with incredible new settings. Available mid to late November to ship.

4K/15, 2.7K/30, 1440/48, 1080/60, 960/100, 720/120 12MP Photo 30 shots in 1 second (plus many more burst settings where you can control how many shots in the burst and how long the burst lasts) WiFi Built in Remote Control Included (only on this model - remote is $79.95 by itself) - if you net out the price of the remote, the Black Edition is only $20 more than the Silver Edition. Advanced Features / Capture (Protune, White Balance, Continuous Photo, and Picture in Video - PIV capabilities) Improved Housing (Locking Latch / Dive Lens)

  • This is the one camera model that comes in two versions; the Adventure Version and the Surf Version. The surf version simply comes with a surf mount, but no floaty back door.

This could be total BS so don't believe this since I can't see anything on their website, I found this on http://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/11irv7/gopro_3_announcedmore_info/ with a link to a thread on TGR forum which doesn't exist, this information is also on one of the comments on gopro facebook post.

So the gopro hero3 is here. Now there is two great contenders if you, like me, are looking for a new helmet camera. Gorpo is covering the how price range as well as contour which released the ROAM2 for $199.

I do like some things on the new hero3 and best is the size and weight, as per the spec it's half the weight compared to the contour, though somethings are just a shame like their new side mount which is terrible, like the camera hanging on the side of your helmet. Contour seems to have much better mounting accessories. No GPS for the hero3.

So I would say that:

hero3: lighter, better camera specs

contour: better mounting accessories, gps

overall I would say cameras are equivalent, and both at the same price considering the top ones $399.

Has anyone tried out the new Contour ROAM2? It looks pretty awesome for the $200 price tag.

^^ 60 FPS for only $200 is pretty sweet.

I believe the ability of controlling and calibrating the camera with an iPhone is the deal breaker between the contourroam2 and the hd3 white (both $199).

I must admit the design of the contour is more appealing, but, unfortunately, I don't think I'll pay $399 to get the contour+2 which would give the same functionality.

Edit: After checking the comparison charts of the HERO3 I might also consider the Silver edition.

Note that the White and Silver editions are Wi-Fi "compatible", meaning you need to purchase those separately, which will considerably add to the final price.

I'm not into gimmicks much, but the Hero 3 mount and design is still the same and it's bulky compared to the Contour design which is far sleeker and less intrusive.  GoPro has better audio quality though, that's for sure.  I'll reserve judgment on the video quality until some side-by-side comparisons are done, but GoPro does make quality video/audio.  Shame about the silly styling though.

I think that's because of the wifi remote, but you still can control the camera using a smartphone, but if you want the wifi remote then you are right and it needs another $80, I agree with the mounting on gopro, that new side mount is just terrible

Aye.

I'd love to see some new side-by-side comparisons and reviews.  I really like the low profile and mount of the Contour but their sound settings and volume control is a serious PITA.  There's no modulation, it either picks up everything (including ALL the wind noise) or it picks up hardly anything and you can hear at all.

You are fast! I will keep my hopes to grab a $50 discount on any of the two during black friday/xmas. Probably will wait for nothing, but I won't be using it before anyway or at least won't have many opportunities to use

You know this MPGear? Haven't heard of them before! But anyway, the deal is on couple of different websites but the coupon code is not valid anymore, I think they realized they couldn't afford that!
