What's the road like from Salzburg to Kitzbuhel?

I think we are going to rent a car when we go to Austria ... I have been on that road before, but it was 20 years ago ... and I wasn't driving ... is it anything to worry about during bad weather? (ie, wondering what kind of auto to rent)

Back in Feb of 2003 I rode the Salzburg snow shuttle bus each day to five different ski areas during a super fun weeklong visit while based in the city of Salzburg.  I didn't go to Kitzbuhel, but I got within about 10 miles of it at Saalbach/Leogang.  I was just a passenger, but don't recall any hairy driving the whole time.  It was all along valley floors on well maintained roads, so I suspect you will be fine unless you are lucky enough to get a huge dump.tongue.gif

Old trip report with info about Salzburg sights (note, in reader comments to first link there was a question about the roads):

Vielen Dank! That is what I remember, as well, but it was summer, too ... not sure.

You have two chances for this route. One is through Lofer and Strub pass, but in case of really bad weather, I would rather avoid it... especially with rented car on which you might or might not have good winter tires. In this case, you have some 50km longer option going on A8 highway (Salzburg-Munchen) and down toward Innsbruck. Except for last 10-15km it's all highway, so normally it's fine, even if weather is really bad.

Perfect, that is exactly what I was wondering. Thank you!

agree, if memory serves, that the road through Lofer can be tough (latest we were on it was November) but Lofer is a great little town to stop in for a short while.
