New Boards for the BF

Hello EpicSki Community - long time listener first time caller here....

Looking to buy my boyfriend a new pair of skis for Christmas and would love some input from all you guys out there in the ether.

A general overview: He's 6'0" about 180 - strong skier who prefers skiing the trees and powder. He will be spending the majority of this season out east except for the handful of trips he'll make out to California to visit me (poor guy won't get to join me out west until after the ski season) where we'll ski somewhere in Tahoe. We'll also be spending two weeks this winter driving from Calgary to Vancouver hitting up any areas that strike our fancy. NEXT season we'll be spending most of our time skiing in Tahoe.

I asked him for a few suggestions and he asked for a pair of 178' 2010 Line Blends (I suspect because he found a good deal for them online and doesn't want to ask for a pricey pair) or some 2011 Dynastar Legend Pro 115s.

I've done a bit of research myself, and have been thinking of a pair of 178' (or 184'?) 2012 Line Sir Francis Bacons - he's skied on a beat up pair of Line Prophet 80's for years so is partial to the brand.

Part of me thinks I should just get him one of the pairs he asked for so he won't be disappointed if I pick something outrageous. However, I also would like to surprise him with a sweet pair that he'll be able to have a blast on while we're in Canada and will still enjoy for a few seasons to come while skiing in Tahoe. Though they're on their last legs, he could still use his Prophet 80's when out east this year.

Are there any guys out there who could sanity check my thinking on the SFB's?

Any intel on the 2010 Blends? I've read everything I could find about them online but nothing that makes me excited about them.

The Dynastar Legend Pros seem like a great choice but have so far been only able to find them in 175' which sounds short to me - no?

Any other skis out there you recommend I consider given the above info?

Any info/opinions would be greatly appreciated - don't want him to be bummed out when he pulls these bad boys out from under the tree this year!

A million thanks and happy winter!

Sincerely,

Definitely over-thinking this decision....

Yes.....you are. And (IMO) you are overthinking in the wishful thinking direction. You are thinking in the direction of skis that will excel in conditions that you/he wish that he will encounter regularly but probably won't. A season of mostly eastern skiing with occasional and undetermined trips to the west does not guarantee a lot of powder skiing. There may be a ton, there may be zero, probably somewhere in between but most likely he may only hit a few powder days all year.

A good western "daily driver" or "one ski quiver" would be something in the 90-100mm range and would not be heavily rockered. There are a ton of great choices and picking one would entail more info about his weight and (honest) ski ability and aggressiveness. However, since he is predisposed to the Line brand, a very good middle of the road ski for the western skier is the Influence 98. This is wider than he will need for 90% of his eastern skiing and wider than necessary for at least 50% of his western skiing but nevertheless is a reasonable all around western ski that will be passable in the east.

FWIW,,,,,I have lived in Tahoe for 35 years and a 98mm (ish) ski would be the width I would choose if I could only have one ski. I also lived in Stowe for four years and if I were buying one ski for back there, it would be somewhat narrower.

Thanks for the feedback SJ - I know the SFBs will not be ideal for his days out east. Was thinking they could be a fun combo with the beat-up Prophet 80's he's currently on and would be the first addition to a quiver designed for skiing out west that he might have to wait until next season to fully appreciate.

Checked out the Line Prophet 98s (I saw Influence 105s but no Influence 98s - did you mean the Prophets?) and they seem like a great middle-of-road choice as you suggested - They're definitely on my short-list now.

Really appreciate the input - I don't normally drop this much dough on a gift (unless it's for myself of course!) so love to hear various opinions.

Hey Bumpfreaq - maybe I'll win the lottery this year, I'll spread the wealth I promise!

Thanks again,

Mel
