recommendations for int-adv all-mtn ski for 9 year old

Thread Starter

I have a fairly light (52 pounds) almost 9 year old boy ready for the next skis. We're looking for 120s - his 110s are clearly too short. He is a very competent and neat skier, carves nicely, has very clean parallels and good form, can ski steep and deep. 99 percent of the skis for him are beginners so it's been hard to sort out what skis to buy. He'll be starting a pre-race program and hasn't shown much interest in the parks so far, so not a twin tip. Ive been recommended the Fischer watea jr. , the Blizzard Origin, the Voikl RTM jr.

we also have a five year old so the skis will probably be passed along and used for a number of years. We live in western washington and the kids ski 15-20 days per year.

any thoughts or feedback on these or other intermediate advanced skis in that length?

My daughter is same age (turning 9 in a month) and almost exact same size (52" 55 lbs). Like your son, she's a strong skier who can both carve on hardpack and handle off-piste conditions in fairly serious terrain.

She has 2 pairs of skis, and we are quite happy with both:

1) Head Worldcup Race in 120. One of few skis this size you'll find with sandwich construction and vertical sidewalls. But since one notch below Head's junior SL and GS race skis, a little softer flex -- good for lightweights like our kids. She was fine on the 120 last year when she was obviously a little smaller...should be perfect for her this year. Stockli makes (or at least did last year) a nice race type ski for small juniors with vertical sidewalls and a moderate flex...probably pretty hard to find a pair though...and pricey.

2) Volkl Gotama Jr in 128 (she skied the 118 last 2 seasons no prob). This is her main ski for western skiing, and it works well all over the hill in all snow conditions...some early tip rise for float and ease of initiation. 80mm under foot which is as wide as I would want to go for such a small kid.

Good luck.

My son is on year 2 with his Volkl Gotama Jrs Great for a jr all mountain ski for Wa.

Regardless of what ski you get, it's got to be something they like and pick out (ok to provide direction). If they're excited about their new skis, it's much better than the most 'appropriate' ski that you pick out for them, if it's not something the would choose.

I just got the Gotama Jr. in 128cm for my 9 y/o daughter.  I'm pretty excited to see how she likes them.
