Binding Mount Question

The short story.

Last season I bought a pair of Sultan 94s and had them mounted up with Salomon Z12 bindings. Loved them. They lacked a bit on hard snow, so I picked up a pair of Sultan 85s to replace my Afterburners (which I kinda hated) for those hard snow days. Same length and bindings. Both from the Start Haus.

When I skied the 85s I felt like I was a bit more forward on the skis than with the 94s so I put them side by side, and lo and behold, the bindings were mounted on the 85s about 2cm more forward than on the 94s. Odd I thought. I also noted that the boot sole center line was 2cm forward on the 85s compared to the 94s.

So why the difference and should I care? What would happen if I remounted the bindings back 2cm on the 85s-effects? Bad idea?

If I read it right, both skis are mounted "on the line". Are both of these skis the same size? You are asking why the line would be 2 cm forward on the 85s? Are the skis not working the way you would hope? Why do you want to move the binding on the 85s back to -2? For firmer snow why would you want to go away from pressuring the tips?

For me not enough difference between them as even the 85's are 60% un-groomed.(versus 70% for the 94s)

If you wanted a hard snow ski

Some people will argue that the manufacturer knows best and you should always mount according to their mark (unless it is a Goat and then there are 1,000's of where do I mount threads).  Personally, I like to be able to fine tune my binding position without re-drillling the skis, so most of my skis have bindings where the mounting position can be moved forwards or backwards.until I find mt sweet spot. YMMV.

Why not ask back at the shop about your concerns? The good folks there want you to be happy and can explain exactly whats what smile.gif

Same size skis. I kinda liked how the 94s felt longer. But your point about pressuring the tips makes sense.

I did consider the sultan 80s, but they had different construction than the 94s. No metal. Since my ABs were 84 underfoot, I thought what the heck. And they do work much better in hard snow than the 94s. Also I wanted a ski that I could travel with-not knowing what I would find. I felt that the 80s would be too narrow for a general purpose western ski.

Yes I may. Or perhaps Phil or SJ will chime in since I bought the skis at their shop. My feeling is more curiousty rather than a concern. Excellent service and tune BTW. icon14.gif

Let me look at two 94 and 85's tomorrow and compare mount points.
