I learned to ski in the East and as I still live in the East I still do most of my skiing in the East. Do I think Eastern skiing sucks? No way! Skiing is great no matter where you are skiing. Do I like to ski out West? You bet! But it is the skiiing that I do back East that enables me to rip it up out West when I get the chance to do so.
I never understood those eastern skiers who once they experienced Western skiing, proclaim that they will never ski the East again, even though that is where they live. Skiing is skiing and if you don't ski what you have close by, guess what? You don't ski! I would rather ski the small 300-750 foot hills that are near by than not ski at all. But that is me.

Does east coast skiing suck? No. You know what skiing does suck? No skiing.

I thought the answer was snowboarding.
FIFY.
I had to watch the auto spell correct, there was a Kevin Smith/Clerks reference (East Coast biased too) which also worked on a multitude of levels.

Ok, rather than keep up this IQ-numbing 'tastes great! less filling!" negativity the OP wants to (yet again) engage in, I think most can admit that there are good times to be had skiing on the east coast. I certainly have many days on the hill in the east that didn't suck.
My question is, is there anyone that prefers skiing on the east coast vice the west (or Europe, or South America, if you wish)? If you were handed the keys to an all-expenses paid vacation to a ski destination of your choice, are there folks out there who would opt for skiing the east? If so, where and why?
I bet there is someone out there who would; I'd like to hear about it.

...and that trip will need to be scheduled 60 days in advance...not 2 days before a eminent Noreaster.

I am an Easterner, I frequent the bunny hills around Toronto, because thats where I live and I have no choice.
The true east mountains in Quebec, VT, etc. are great. But I did get out to the west coast last year (Vancouver, Whistler, Cypress) and that is just on a whole other level. And I was just scratching the surface, and honestly those were the best ski days of my life. Not to take anything away from the true east mountains, because they are great in their own right.
The inferiority complex from the Eastern folk is almost as funny as the snobbery coming from the Western folk.
Almost.

We tear it up on the East Coast!
was that you? awesome skiing!

I started skiing in South America (Chile and Argentina), and had the opportunity to do several ski trips no North America. All of them to the west.
I'm pretty sure there is great skiing in the east as well, and I'd love to get to know places in Vermont, Quebec etc.
But from a foreigner perspective, having to plan ski trips in advance, and knowing that the cost to ski the east will be very similar to the west. I don't think I'd ever plan I ski trip to eastern North America.
But definitely the words "skiing" and "sucks" should never be used in the same sentence. I would give away some beautiful Brazilian beaches in order to have some east cost skiing nearby in a heartbeat...
Hahaha no, I was actually taking the piss. I don't know that guy. Just googled the "hardest" run at my local resort and that's what came up.
I'm more of the mind that the East Coast sucks. The skiing is one of the best parts.
Having fun doesn't suck.
Skiing is fun.
Work sucks.
Not working doesn't suck.
Skiing is not work.
There is skiing on the East Coast, which is both fun and not work.
Therefore, East Coast skiing does not suck!
But what if skiing is work? (and I genuinely wonder about that)

I wouldn't, personally, but I've known people who due to altitude issues prefer VT or Maine. Basically, no 2-3 day period of headaches and sucking wind before the vacation starts to be more fun. Also, many vacationers actually find NE resorts less crowded than many major western resorts midweek. While western resorts will be less crowded overall almost all the time, the way the average vacationer pack into the skiable acreage can make the NE seem more open to them.
define work.
Ski instructing, patrol, lifts?
Hiking for turns?
btw i was kidding about the awesome part
Work, as in employment
Let's go with instruction, because patrol is another cup of tea, and I wouldn't consider being a liftie to be very exciting.
considering that most do not make a living wage ski teaching, the benefits are limited to skiing/skiing gear. I would say it has to be pretty damn fun in fact if it wasnt fulfilling in other ways Id imagine we would get paid much better. I enjoy helping people out, and in real life people can either listen to me or not, and someone from the internet can't just tell me I am wrong with nothing to back it up. Overall making people happy is a huge reason why the job is fun.
I would also say that many if not all patrolers enjoy there job.

Given how often you post things with nothing to back it up, that's a wee bit funny.
I'm still opening this thread looking for the awesome EC pics, though.
I back things up more than anyone else on here.
Boy, your post count is getting close to the summit elevation of Stowe
| Vertical | 2360 ft - (658 m) |
|---|---|
| Top elevation | 3719 ft - (1133 m) |
| Base elevation | 1559 ft - (475 m) |
| Skiable area | 485 acres (1.96 km2) |
| Runs | 116 total |
he is closer to the summit elevation of Alyeska.
Nope..
http://www.alyeskaresort.com/mountain/about-stats-lift-info.aspx
thanks for quoting and proving yourself wrong
base elevation 250 feet
lift serviced - 2500 feet
which = 2750 feet!!!
To top it off the top of Alyeska Mountain is lower than Mount Mansifield.
Alyeska, Ak 3939 feet
Mount Mansifield 4394 feet
this really prove nothing except that top lift elevation and summit elevation are bad way to compare places.

Um, isn't the Alyeska summit within the resort boundaries and heli served? What are the options to get to the top of Mansfield?
I think the elevation and air density is an important factor when planning a ski trip. Higher is always better until you get up over 12K
And this is from their website..
| Skiable Terrain | 1,400 skiable acres 113 acres of snowmaking |
| Total Number of Runs | 73 |
| Elevation Base Lift-Served Total Vertical Rise Summit |
250 feet |
| Lift Accessed Vertical Rise | 2,500 feet |
A short hike in tennis shoes if memory serves
I'd still rather get off the Beech triple at 5,400 feet. Keep your sneakers, rocks, and stumps
