Mid-Atlantic GTG @ T-line, WV, Feb 10-13, 2012

MID-ATLANTIC GTG, T-LINE, WV FEB 10-13, 2012

Several Epicski Get Togethers are already scheduled for this winter, so before calendars fill I thought I better post about the one we are planning in the Mid-Atlantic.  We are gathering at Timberline, WV on Feb 10-13, 2012, the weekend before President's Weekend and often very snowy.  You are invited to join us at one of the best mountains for advanced skiers in the region with an honest 1000 feet of vertical.  We'll probably rent a group house again (4th time).  T-line is located in Canaan Valley, also the site of Canaan Valley Alpine Ski Area and Whitegrass Nordic Touring Center (off piste skiing).  There are numerous sliding and lodging choices for those who want to do their own thing and join us on the hill for a day or two.  We'll have several T-line regulars showing us the best trails, bumps, glades and snow, including Epicski Timberline Ambassador:  JOHNL. Ott+Wedeln.gif

Timberline website: http://timberlineresort.com/winter/

We are planning to rent a house that will sleep between 8-14 depending on interest.  We have a core of participants, but room for more especially at this early stage.  If you have questions or are interesting in joining us please post here or send me a PM over the next month.  The size of the house will depend on the number of folks that commit to participate by early Dec.  By that time we'll make a reservation and it will be first come, first serve for any remaining slots.  The cost will likely be about $125 for each person for three nights slopeside lodging including potluck meals 3x per day.  A lot of the overnighters are singles, but we also have couples that take private bedrooms.

The past few years we have gathered at Blue Knob, PA with typically about 2-3 dozen participants including a friendly mix of day trippers and overnighters of varied abilities. There is the likelihood of extending the skiing to include Friday and/or Monday if desired. The age spread of past participants ranged from kids to 70+, originating from NC, VA, MD, WV, PA, DC, etc.  As the date approaches we'll share more info about conditions, tickets, directions, etc.  Timberline is ~3 hours from Washington, Baltimore, Wheeling, Pittsburgh, and ~4-5 hours from Roanoke, Richmond and Columbus. Here are trip report threads from the last couple of gatherings:

If want to join our group house rental please post here or send me a PM during November.  Let me know if any questions.

Regards, Jamesj

Sounds fun, guys! Will have to bow out this year, but can't wait to read the TR!!!

I was really hoping it was going to be at Blue Knob this year. Probably won't be able to make it down to WV.

I probably wouldn't be staying overnight, but would it be ok if I came up for a day?  It'd be nice to finally meet some of the infamously nice epic ski crew.

Timberline is a good mountain worth the drive.  Some of us will probably be day tripping to BK during the winter.  Stay in touch.

If I make it to BK (which I plan on) I'll put out the word on here. Doubt I'll be able to pull off the drive to WV with the trips I already have planned.

Sorry to hear that. This little video is from the Tucker county backcountry & Whitegrass last February. Kindof a sample of our typical conditions this time of February, courtesy of chaga and Laurel Hill Crazy,

Here's another video of some local rippers at Tline & WG.  These guys can ski the park and BC, on regular DH skis & on skinny XC skis.  There's some good pow shots starting at the 2 minute.  Video courtesy of the Lutz's.

Hey that's a nice coat, looks like the one I wear when I go to 7 Springs, safety orange, so everyone can see me and not run me down, but that looks like my jacket, not me though.

Sorry jimmy, I'd love to take credit for this video or even say in honesty that I'm a part of this posse but alas, I'm not.

All you folk drooling over the videos in this post I must warn you that it is all a photo shopped hoax. Everybody knows there is no tree skiing and no powder in the Mid-Atlantic.BSmeter.gif biggrin.gif

I love love love the passion of this Mid-Atlantic GTG!  Can hardly wait for the TR!

Lurking, likely to drop in Saturday afternoon as usual.  Just not 100% positive yet.

I'll more than likely be able to come for at least a couple of days.  Hopefully the whole weekend!

Put me down for a bed at the group house also.

Mike, thanks for bumping this.  I'm getting ready to book a place for this event.  I'm looking at a smaller place and have nearly all beds taken already.  If anyone wants to join us and is ready to pay upfront ~$125 for three nights slopeside/near slopeside WITH 3 meals daily you need to post here or PM me by 12/18/11.  If I get enough bites I may switch to a larger house.  If you're not ready to commit this soon you can always make do-it-yourself travel arrangements as the date gets close and join us for turns and apres ski time.icon14.gif  ...But you won't get a deal like this.

My bad. I misread the dates of Feb 10-13 as Jan 10-13.

We're at Timberline now.  Mon was good -4 trails from top, 18 from midstation.

Today stunk. Rain much of the day.

Wednesday  amazed us. Timberline has decent Pisten Bully snowcats and had

groomed the  granular to a non icy surface close to packed snow.  Granted only

4 runs were open from the top: Dew drop, White Lightning, Salamander, & the Drop

The Drop (not groomed- "double black") turned  very icy to resemble Extrovert at Blue Knob.

About 8 more runs open (not icy) open on lower half of hill.

Thursday was  even better.  No ice anywhere (except The Drop).

Also Thursday they pushed giant piles of snow around on Thunderstruck.

We left Thursday night & Friday Thunderstruck was opened for first time.

Making snow on Boomerang.

Not sure about Feb 10-13 yet.
