Cred/Reputation Points? - Page 3

I've either had a moment of geniality or the opposite, but why not, after giving it a few days and maybe find the format the deciding group wants it to have, put it to the polls and find out how the community feels?

Do you really need an algorithm to determine whose posts are substantive? Whatever happened to critical thinking?

I can see at least three values in this:

1. Letting new people and outsiders know easily how much weight to give a post.

2. Encouraging those who can and do write substantive posts to do so more frequently.

3. Prodding the rest of us to use the thumbs-up button when appropriate.

I just have doubts it will be perceived as it was meant to be. In its current form it's a vague, undefined rating of sorts, maybe therein lie the problems I have with it. Many will see it as a grading of themselves ( I fear ), and it may discourage members from posting. IMO it would better serve its purpose if it was for private viewing only, giving you or me a little stoke without offending others, a personal achievement of sorts.

Personally, I don't care for any kind of online rating of people, but I will remain here no matter the outcome of this. In the greater scheme of things it's not too important ( to me ). Others may see it differently.

Maybe my rantings are because it keeps getting warmer, not colder, where I am, and I feel the downpour is pretty wasted when it comes as rain instead of white, fluffy stuff.  And come it does, bucketloads the last days. If only...

For now I'll  follow Bob Lee's advice and try not to over-think this matter.

I realize you are trying it out to see how it works and what people think, but I'm sure there are others who are unhappy about it who haven't chimed in. It creates almost a class system and enhances the cliquish nature of things. And I'm certainly not complaining from a personal point of view because I for some reason have suddenly been elevated to a high standing here by my cred rating.
People use post count as a metric which has it's flaws, but at least it's well understood.
If a system wide system is being used to "rate" members, I would think that the rating system should be promoted and encouraged to be used before the results are shown.
Kind of like having a little known voting system utilized by a small percentage of possible voters and not publicized - and then putting those results up for the general public.

Mods, i have a suggestion.  Why don't we post about this on TGR to get some thoughts and comments there?  popcorn.gif

This "cred" thing has been used on biking forums with little benefit to anyone. After a while nobody seems to even notice them, except new people who might gravitate towards posts from "high cred posters". That could be good and bad, since high cred is usually achieved by popularity on the forum rather than giving the best advice.

Thread Starter

A skateboard forum I use has green bars, then gold bars, then big suns.  They also have the ability to neg people.  So, sometimes when someone gets their first sun people take turns neg-ing the person at night to remove the sun then plus-ing them in the morning to put it backroflmao.gif

I looked into this, and found that if this thing has been counting for the past ten months, then I've received 59 creds in 176 posts, which gives me warm fuzzy feelings, heck, I've picked up four on this thread alone, which was actually more creds than posts. Oops, I'm probably blowing my average by posting a non brilliant post, everyone knows that having a high cred per post average is good, whereas a low average means BAD. smile.gificon14.gif

All you guys with high cred owe it to ME since it looks like I was the almost the only person giving them out!  hissyfit.gif

Actually, I was surprised to see how many thumbs up I'd given out.  Turns out I'm a total cred whore.

True, so thanks and here's one back for you.

These are kind of fun, I don't see what the problem is.

Stop the Presses (or is it the Interwebz now?)

Rumors of announcement next week :  Epicski to merge with New Schoolers

Epicski Management spokesperson says

"Now that we have some good Cred we feel we can play in the park too. When the merger is complete new members will get a combined Steeze-Cred rating.  Future plans will set annual thresholds for membership to weed out low steeze-cred scores.  Any such non cool kidz will be offered complimentary membership to Snowheads instead."

"The proposed name for  the new site is "Epic Schoolers Have It Together.  While this is probably too long a name for the attention span of many of the new members we will look for some abbreviations we can use, perhaps our members can give us some suggestions. .... "

Watch this space....

While we're at it, let's rename the points: Gnar-Adjusted Peer-Initiated Cred.

The "search" function is still an abomination, so now we get this. rolleyes.gif.

You did remember to rep...errr, I mean hit the thumbs-up icon to add to their cred level? cool.gif

I'm looking forwards to seeing if this can be pulled off.

I've never seen a site do this "rep point" thing and not have it go horribly off the rails. But I'm sure there must be one somewhere.

I admit that as a low-cred person I dislike this feature overall .  I can see it being useful or a limited number of users if and only if it matures (and that involves the somewhat improbable scenario of people giving creds only to substantial and helpful posts, not thumbing up their friends just because, etc.; on a larger internet, the numbers take care of that (example: PageRank) but I would venture to say that Epic is still rather small to have the crowds to drown out that kind of behavior).  Internet boards tend to be clique-ish by nature, adding a metric to it and displaying it front and center is a problem.   For the majority of people it is more of an annoyance and joke fodder (nothing is wrong with that though).  It also adds to the feature clutter, which is a bigger problem for me.

Maybe we just need a new emoticon:

I find it insulting and more of a high school clique thing where the precious get attention and the others hope to get some. It's silly and destructive . I don't play that way and if my 7,000 some posts have no credibility than there is nothing I can do to change that but feel a bit saddened all the good I tried to share has gone to waste. I don't see it as over reaction but a reaction to change that is not fairly represented .  As an instructor if I have no credibility than i am worthless to anyone. I do not accept this designation.

So many great people here , thank you all for so much

Maybe the reason you don't have "cred" is because you're so thin-skinned....

Clearly most people weren't using the thumbs up AT ALL.  And, maybe the threads you post in have as much to do with your thumbs up count as anything else.  For instance, I rarely read the instruction stuff.... I learned a few years back that 1) I couldn't follow a lot of it, and 2) that pretty soon even if I could there were so many opinions as to be useless for people like myself.  So, I stopped LOOKING at those threads.  Now, since I'm one of the top "thumb givers", then obviously the fact that you are probably more focused on threads I have no interest in had as much to do with your lack of thumbs as anything.

I suggest that now that everyone "gets" the thumbs up feature and sees the impact that you give it a little time instead of getting your nose out of joint.  Seriously.
