I'm looking for a utility ski for myself and I believe an SL Race ski would be perfect. I want to see if for SL Race stock skis I have them in the right priority for stiffness.
Soft to hard:
I know there are more but these seem easier to come by. Does that sound right? I'm basing it on what I've been told or read mostly. I would prefer a sandwich construction race stock ski to a cap ski. I'm planning on buying used as I want to keep this cheap as I've already spent a small fortune on race gear for my daughter and I.
Here's a bunch of background data:
I'm not going to have time to demo because the demos around here happen after I need the skis.
I'm not going to race SL. I may play in the gates or do a race camp but it would only be for training purposes.
Also, I want the ski as a utility ski. I ski groomers, instruct, set gates and will go into the bumps here and there (I have another pair of skis to use in the bumps). I love the edge hold on my Elans; GSX and SLX. I want something that gives me that but isn't crazy demanding.
I have a pair of (old) Elan SLX in 155. They are a blast but are on the way out and I 165 would suit me more. If I could find a deal on the Elan 165 SLX I would jump on it. They seem to be few and far between in this area though.
I believe the Volkl Racetiger is right up my alley too. There's two or three versions of it and other instructors I ski with have the FIS version and say I would be fine on it for what I want. Both of them use it. I would be leaning towards the non FIS one though.
Fischer is easier to come by around here and I think they would be fine too.
Nordica SLR sounds great and not crazy stiff.
My concern in all this is that I'm basing this on reviews written by people that are either much smaller than me or (140#) or larger (220#). I'm 170# (will be by ski season).
So all that means I'm looking for an ice holding edge, that has some forgiveness, and doesn't require complete focus (when instructing I'm usually paying attention to the students more than myself).
I have the Elan GSX in 21.2M and can ski and bend that without issue but it does take more focus. I have an all mountain ski, a cheater GS ski and the Elan GSX. A SL race ski is the one thing I need for my skiing.
