Help! I'm looking for new skis!!! I was thinking of getting the Volkl Tierra or Fuego or something else?

Hi,

I'm 5'9", I weigh 172.  My knees have gotten pretty bad and I'm looking for a lightweight very responsive ski!  I am currently on 177 Salamon Guns and they are too heavy for me.  I had tried my brother in laws' Salamon 1080's and I like how quickly they responded.

I consider myself and Advanced to expert skier!  Please help!

The two Volkls that you are considering are both stiffer and heavier than what you have and are a far cry from the Sollie 1080. While the 1080 is obsolete you can find some similar characteristics in some current models such as........

Salomon Lady/Lord

Line Celebrity

Billzard Black Pearl

And probably the best choice of all, the Fischer KOA 88/Watea 88.

Sorry to interject.  How would a Line Prophet Flite compare in that company Jim?  In a comparable length.

Flite = Celebrity

No, not even close.

The iXRC is in roughly the same category as the two Volkls but all three are diametrically opposed to what you say you liked (Solly 1080). If you need a screwdriver, don't buy a hammer.

Excellent, I am looking at the KOA....what length can you recommend for my height 5' 9" and weight 172?

It depends on where you ski, how you ski and what you want them to do for you.  Are you into aggressive short turns on a crowded hill, cruisey and fast long radius turns on fresh corduroy, billygoating around in side country gulleys, spinny/flippy behaviour in the park?

First thoughts are somewhere in the high 160s (whatever length Fischer makes in that spot) but you'll need to provide that bit more detail to be sure.  Mind you, I've not ever touched a Fischer Koa, so take my advice with a grain of salt.  Jim will fill in the blanks, I'm sure, and I'd trust his advice far more than my own.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone!  I like to do all kinds of skiing.  But we don't have the huge mountains in Ontario Canada.  I have messed up my knee.  I am trying to find a place to buy KOA or Wattea they are hard to find online.

I currently have some long Salomon Guns.  A lot of fun.  But I want something easy to ski with that will respond when I want to turn it up.  I coach our school's alpine ski team on the smallest hill in the world I think!!! So I like to be able to ski fast, or ski backwards and hit small jumps :)

Hopefully I don't need knee surgery and I can get out on the hills this year! :)

Oddly for a girl I know far more about mens skis than ladies but the black pearls gets rave reviews on theskidiva, I have seen a lot of them out and about on the slopes being skied by people grinning their heads off. Might be worth asking (could try sending a PM) Trekchick who has far more girls gear knowledge than I do or check out TheSkiDiva.com where you will find a load of reviews of womens gear. You might not get all the techie stuff so much but you will get straight opinions from women who know what they like.
