T.C. obviously you don't know the kind of fine upstanding citizens that live up here in Tahoe, we are the pillars of society and the salt of the earth, ahhh crap who am I kidding. Anyway, we would never do such a thing. FYI, tomorrow can't be considered a powder day, because the best lines aren't skiable.

Alpine Bowl or Shirley Lake??

So... after last night delivered more snow than expected, I'm curious what other openings there have been at Squawlpine.  Anyone?

Alpine's site says that on the upper mountain, Alpine Bowl has been joined by D-8, Sun Spot, The Face, Wolverine Bowl, and Terry's Return, and I've heard from folks who've skied Palisades, Lower Keyhole, Deer Camp, and such.  That suggests to me that at least Peril Ridge (North, Pete's, John's, and South) should be open, and Waterfall may be as well.  On the lower mountain, it looks like everything between Weasel and Kangaroo Ridge (with the possible exception of Hot Wheel's Gully) should be ripe.

I am back in the Bay Area and it looks like Shirley and Gold Goast are running up top.  No KT-22, so only Squaw Creek, Far East, Exhibition, and Red Dog are open at the bottom.   But Shirley should be a delight, and big step up from "shredding" Gold Coast powder.

Don't forget that we were joined by donkey around 11:00 (he had a hard time understanding what first chair means).

Dookey was on his Blizzard Magnum 8.7's but was skiing them like they're spatulas. biggrin.gif

Anyhooooo, I didn't want to chance getting in trouble for not mentioning a hook up with donkey again.

(The WildeOne and WildeOne Son met up with us for a run or two as well, but they don't seem to be dissed if we don't mention their name like donkey does)tongue.gif

Edit:  Just noticed that spellcheck turns Dookey into donkey if I don't capitalize, but I'll leave it that way for effect. devil.gif

Yes, my dear Trickshot.

It sounds like word of good conditions at Alpine on Sunday spread and there were bigger lines on Monday than Sunday.

I was also at Northstar and found that snow higher up on the mountain was very good. I hit untracked all seven times I dropped off East Ridge near Toninni's and The Chute. Backside and Lookout were not as good. Too much junk under the snow when you got off the runs and many runs not yet open.

I didn't get there until 10 as my friend struggled for 3 hours to clear the 14" of heavy snow from his 700 foot driveway this morning. When he came in at 9, he said it would take another hour to clear to his garage. Since my car was already clear we went to Northstar in it and quit about 3 so he could finish his snowblowing.

May try a Northstar morning and Heavenly afternoon tomorrow as I have friends staying with me in So. Shore tomorrow night.

Siberia was turning, not loading yet. I would not be surprised that more high angle groom runs open. After skiing Alpine and Squaw back to back a few times, I had a feeling that Squaw has some problems. The Arc opened but only served pizza and hot dog. I went to Alpine, they have a full menu and the cashier even ask me if I have a season pass so she can give me discount, how nice! About 10 or 15 minutes before Gold Coast starting loading, there was a lifty holding a sign or something telling people not to wait because it may not run today, really?

Work on the street is it did.

Skied Squaw yesterday.  Kt22 did not have enough cover, yet there was a steady stream of people going up.  Every single person I saw was hitting rocks. I did one run and picked my way down slowly to avoid the rocks... not a fun way to ski.  It was also raining form bottom to top.  It was sort of a disappointing day.  I am from Canada and it was my first time ever at Tahoe on a trip booked months ago.  Squaw looks like it has some of the most interesting terrain I have seen on a lift serviced mountain.  We made the best of our day but now I go home without fully experiencing this mountain treasure.

I'm sorry to hear that you were unable to ski Tahoe in its glory. frown.gif

Please come back when we can show off a little.

Thanks, we'll be back.  We still had a great time.  I live by the motto - "there is no such thing as a bad day of skiing".  With the rain there was no crowds and we were able to ski every lift that was open and every run  that had snow at Squaw.  Northstar had better cover and there was lots of skiable mountain.   And we had a great cruiser day at Heavenly... you just had to ski around the hoards of people like they were slalom poles.

February forecast from Tahoe Weather Discussion.  Obviously take this with a huge grain of salt, which Bryan makes clear, but let's hope he's right.

Question for all you experienced Tahoe-ers!

Would you guys make the trip out to South Lake Tahoe (Heavenly) next week if you were coming from the East Coast (flights, hotels, car rentals, etc) or would you cancel it and try again next year?

Any help is appreciated!

double post..sorry!

Depends on your exact needs.  I'm going to be in Tahoe this week and it's going to suck as far as conditions go (it rained and now we're in a melt freeze cycle), but not really because the friends I'm going to go with are mostly stick to the groomer types anyway.  Plus it's only a few hours in the car for me, not a flight.

I'd reschedule for late February or early March if you can.

Let's put it this way. I went to Squaw for around an hour today before I core shotted my skis and pulled the plug. I can be in the Squaw parking lot in 15 minutes from the time I walk out my door. I can't imagine traveling to ski this area right now. Seriously, head for Seattle and hit Crystal, Baker, Whistler... Sorry to buzz kill you, and other people might say something different, just my two cents from a long time skier and Tahoe local.

I hear Northstar has good coverage on the groomers, so maybe that could work for you. I however don't ski to be on the groomers everyday.

Buzz kill is fine if that's what's needed. We already cancelled and rebooked once, we can do it again. It won't make us happy but United is probably laughing all the way to the bank.

We'd probably be on the groomers a fair amount but the idea of going out west to ski is to be off the groomers (not something we see on the East coast all that much).

Thanks for the opinions! Any and all are welcome!

Cancel or fly to some other places with snow.  90 percent of Heavenly (and the best terrain) is closed.
