Dalbello Viper Boot Flex

I recently tried on several boots to start making a decision on a new purchase.  One of the boots I tried was the Dalbello Viper 10.  The last/shell/liner fit was quite good for my foot.  The flex, however, felt quite a bit softer than the boots of other brands with a similar 100 flex rating.  I did not get a chance to try the Viper 12, but I was wondering about the flex for that boot.  Is it reasonable to assume that if the Viper 10 felt softer than its 100 flex rating, the Viper 12 would feel softer than its 120 flex rating?  Before I go around trying to find a shop with the Viper 12, I was hoping someone could give me some input on its flex.  I realize flex ratings are not standardized at all, but the Viper 10 was noticeably outside the range of several other boots I tried in that 100-110 flex range.

Thanks for your help.

Well it appears you understand how the flex ratings work so a fair assumption would be that the 120 flex Viper 12 should feel about 20% stiffer than the Viper 10's 100 flex, whatever that may actually be depending on whose reference you choose to employ.  So I would suggest that the difference would likely be pretty proportionate to other brands differences between their flex ratings albeit a bit softer per reference number.

You are correct there is no standard and these ratings are simply a reference within a particular manufacturer's line.  There is another factor which is more difficult to assess and that is how each boot's stiffness will change/increase with temperature change/drop?  Some boots will become quite noticeably stiffer as they get colder while others will not be affected as much.  That is a  whole other can o worms.

good luck!

Thanks for the input.  Your final comments are a perfect reminder of the next thing I wanted to ask!  Based upon personal experience or feedback from customers, which boots in this performance range might be prone to more stiffness in the cold than others?  I have heard the Tecnica Dragon line may be particularly notorious for getting stiffer in the cold.  I would love to hear about any of the following ...

Dalbello Viper 12, Lange RX100/110, Atomic Hawx 100/110, Salomon Impact 100CS.

Thanks for the help in this forum!!!  I have FINALLY gotten it through my thick head that the extra time and money invested in the right boots (and the right fitting) is the best foundation for any real skiing improvement I want to make.

Yes, I know ... it's about time I made this realization!  Any input/experience on the relative increase in stiffness in the cold of the boots I mentioned in the previous post?
