I'm sure I'll be bugging people for more info/help if and when the trip is closer to happening.  Thanks to all who responded.

So one option that has presented itself is free lodging at Crested Butte.  Is this something that I should consider?  After doing a bit of research on bestsnow.net, CB isn't quite as good for late season snow quality as Summit County, but it's not all that bad in its own right (high elevation, north facing slopes, lower skier density).  Just looking for general impressions of late season skiing at CB.

IMHO: CB would be a much better first time experience than Summit County.

Why?  Scenery?  Ski town?

Ski Town for sure, much less crowded, less traffic, not part of the evil empire.

I just don't like Summit County, Frisco and Silverthorn in particular.  Strip malls, fast food, chain motels and homogenized skiing for the masses.

The pass wars have been great for the Denver skier market.  But I have to question why any destination skier would ever go there?

If the answer is cheap, then you probably would be better off in Utah!

I can't speak to Crested Butte, I've not been. We spent a week in Frisco a couple of years ago and loved it. Main St. is quite charming, IMO. It has several restaurants, pubs, etc. Yes there is a Wallmart and  a strip mall on the road coming into town off the interstate, but we liked the Main St. area a lot. Main St is basically lined with Victorian buildings. Though I've not spent any real time there my guess is that Silverthorne and Dillon are less charming. We also liked Main St. in Breck. From Frisco you're 6-7 miles from Copper and the buses are convenient, 9-10 miles to Breck, 15ish miles to Keystone, Arapahoe Basin is just up the road from Keystone, and easy driving distance to Vail and Beaver Creek. By April things shouldn't be too busy anywhere. The base at Copper is around 9600' and it has lots of N facing slopes. Base at A-Basin is arung 10,500' and it's known for spring skiing. If you're booking ahead it's probably as safe a bet for early April conditions as you'll get in U.S. Rockies.
