Two female skiers looking for roommates near Squaw Valley

Thread Starter

We're two 22 year old females from Maine looking to ski at Squaw Valley for the upcoming ski season.  We want to live in either Truckee or Tahoe City and are looking for roommates and/or a furnished sublet.  Is anyone interested, or can anyone give us their recommendations or advice on towns/apartments/anything!?

I'd love to bunk up with two 22-year-old girls looking for fun. Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near Squaw. And I don't think I have enough room, what with my wife and all.

If you look around, you may find a ski lease or co-op to join.  Usually there are work requirements in a group, but that generally leads to a sense of community with other house mates.

Ski Spirit joined one that she talked about on SkiDiva.

I'd love to see the TGR responses to this.   If I were single this would be mine..

Please, please, please cross-post this on tgr. There isn't enough popcorn in the world for what would ensue.

I'd buy a front row seat for a TGR cross-post.

Sorry no help here, but good luck in your search ladies.

Hmmm two 22 year olds or one 44 year old. I will deal with the devil I know and choose the latter.

Well, the responses pretty much show the average age of a regular Epic user...  Pretty pathetic, right?  Well done guyscool.gif.

OP- good luck finding housemates in Truckee, and have fun skiing Squaw, it is going to a blast after East Coast.  Who knows, maybe one of you will end up as my kids' team coaches this winter.    If you choose to live in Truckee, choose the lodging with relatively easy access to a major road in a snowstorm.  If it is dumping and you have to drive to work that morning, you won't want to swim through the snow or wait for the plow.  I am sure that being from Maine you are well-attuned to that part of living in a cold climate.

I could pass for 22 if I stop off on the way at Botox Beach in LAbeercheer.gif

You girls need to post your question over at TGR.  TGR forums have much younger skiers and riders than the old farts like myself that hang out here at EpicSki.

If you're going to be skiing Squaw frequently, you may want to consider looking for a place along Olympic Valley Drive as well.

Mr. Prickly is from Maine, too, and he says screw Squaw Valley, head to the Alps. He doesn't have room for any more lobster girls in his condo, but he'll give you his card.

Some questions:

  • Full time or part time?
  • Are you going to be working, and if so, where (or what kind of job, if you don't know yet)?
  • Why Truckee or Tahoe City?  You can be closer to the slopes at Squaw (or Alpine, which is merging with Squaw and will be running shuttles between the two areas).  If you're going to be full time, you can pay less rent as you go either South or Northeast out of Tahoe City on 89 or 28, because those locations are less convenient for weekenders coming in on Interstate 80.
  • And a related question:  Is your priority going to be skiing, working, or partying?  If the former, you want to be closer to the slopes than Tahoe City or Truckee, so you don't spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to get to the hill on a powder day, because there's often an inverse relationship between how much you'll want to ski and how long the drive will take.  If you're going to be working, try to live near where you'll work for the same reason -- you don't want to lose your job because you got stuck on the way.  If partying is key, I'm a boring old fart and can't give you knowledgeable advice.

Some ideas, some of which may make more or less sense depending on the your answers to those questions:

  • Craigslist is obviously a good option -- definitely Reno, and the Sacramento and Bay Area sites may have some as well.
  • VRBO.com is worth a look too.
  • Try the local papers' classifieds:  The Sierra Sun, Moonshine Ink, and I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.
  • Local ski lease agencies include Alpine Rental Group, HausermanAgate Bay, Tahoe Moon, Tahoe Vacation Properties, and Tahoe Truckee Vacation Properties.  There may be some others listed here.  Those are the ones I still have bookmarked, but I haven't looked for leases for a while, so there may be more.
  • If you're going to be working and already know where, ask your co-workers-to-be.  They may have space, and they will almost certainly have friends who need a roommate or two.
  • Housingconnection.com may be worth the money to join.

Also, on the off chance that you're looking for weekdays and not weekend, send a PM to Sinecure here.  His lease at Alpine (just over the ridge and a quick shuttle ride from Squaw) is full on weekends but they have a couple of weekday openings, which should be pretty cheap, and he's a recovering New Hampshirite, so you'll be able to relate.

A general caution:  You will see a lot of listings for ski lease shares.  If you're planning to be full time, they probably won't want you -- they're aimed towards part time folks, and usually, people who aren't up every weekend.

Looks like TheDad gave you a LOT of info.  I don't think I can add much!  Best of luck!  Consider posting your own ad on Craigslist Reno describing what you're looking for.  Hope it works out!!

You bet.  Answering those questions here may lead to some additional thoughts from me and others... or not.

But if not, see you on the hill.

We are fixing up a house at 660 Squaw Valley road. Hopefully it will be ready to rent for the season (I'm headed up tomorrow with a few new dual glazed low E windows). 4 br 2 1/2 bath. A bit funky but cute. And super convenient for getting to Squaw and also easy travel to Truckee or Tahoe City. Rent ~$2000/mo but looking for year round tenants. Tahoe in summer is pretty happening. We are working on it right now if you are in the area. Stop by and check it out.

While this house is new to us we have rented out another spot in the valley for years. Julie from Moonshine Ink (local paper) is our current tenant if you want references for us. We do check references on you (and all additional roommates).

If you are interested in permanently relocating to Squaw, send me a PM reply here.

eric, thanks for all the information, but we're actually only looking to be out for the ski season so I don't know if the house is right for us, again thanks for keeping us in mind!

I don't mean to hijack the thread but my college runs an alpine resort management diploma and enrollees include winter olympic aspirants. For late February to early March 2012 'll be looking for housing for 10-20 people for 2 weeks as we study great resorts, masterplans, business models etc etc.

Hey,

Did you guys find any housing/roommates yet? I am also from Maine! I moved to San Francisco last year and this will be my second season at Squaw. I promise you will not be disappointed! My boyfriend and I got a late start and are just starting our search now...we are going to be more of your weekend warrior though. But, we want a full share. Let me know if you guys may be interested in trying to find something together.

Nicole:

They haven't been back here in three weeks.  You might want to send them a PM, which will probably get forwarded to their account.

You should also check out snowpals.org, both the discussion list and the list of leases.
