Thread Starter

Did Huddler do a new platform roll out? I just posted a reply in a thread and an orange box appeared around my box with a heading that said "Thread Starter". At first I thought it was some algorithm detecting thread hijacks or potential new thread ideas, but then realized it was identifying posts from the person who started the thread. I find it kind of annoying and distracting from the threads imo.

EDIT: Apparently it even applies the box to the first post so you can see what it looks like around this post.

I just noticed that too. I like it.

I think it makes sense for some threads esp. in the instruction and gear forums, but posts like the currently popular name this trail or song title fun threads its just clutter.

One person's cool new feature is another person's annoyance.  Such is life.

I like it, but that's just my $.02.  There have been plenty of times where I scroll back up to the top to see who the OP was to understand the context of certain posts.  I agree that for things like the "name this trail" thread, it doesn't add anything.  But I think those types of threads are in the minority.

I am using Safari and the difference is quite subtle and no clutter at all.

I like it. There have been threads where it would have been useful. Although, we could maybe tone it down a little bit.

We should have probably let you know about the last update. This is one of the features. Supporters are probably seeing new things like view edit history on posts that have been edited. Basically it just keeps things honest. Most edits are to correct spelling or clarify, but sometimes content is altered that make a subsequent post look out of place. Now you can see what happened.

We have also given supporters the ability to "superflag". If you report a post, it can be removed from view until a moderator reviews the post report. This "hold for moderation" is only given to supporters at this point, and we trust your judgement.

Here is what else was added:

Who's Online per Thread/Forum
A longtime request: the "who's online" list will now appear inside individual forums and threads, showing specific visitors to certain areas. Look for it in the right side of the page. NOTE: this does not expose any additional information than the platform already did before. We've always shown who visited what thread/forum, but it was all gathered on one big page for the entire site. The update distributes this information so it can be shown in context around the site.

Who Posted?
From any thread list page, you can click the reply count to get a table of who posted in a given thread and how many times. Useful for a variety of purposes, and sometimes just interesting to look at!

625

Zero Credit Forums
We can configure certain forums NOT to contribute to users' post counts. If you don't want posts in "Off Topic" to swell users' post counts. This is NOT retroactive, and we are not currently using this feature.

Profile Infractions
Moderators can issue an infraction directly to a user's profile now. Previously we could only give an infraction for their posts and other content. Mostly this has to do with improper commercial links or spam.

Thread Starter Notation
Within a thread, the user who started the thread will now be labeled "thread starter" in all their posts throughout the thread.

PM Preview

Preview functionality was added to PMs (this is mostly useful for users on the BBCode editor).

Deleted Posts Visibility
At the request of partners, we've added new permissions that can allow you to see your own deleted posts and threads vs. seeing all of them. In some situations, sites allow users to see their own deleted posts (so they can know with certainty that it was deleted, and view the reason left by the mod). We have not implemented this at Epicski, but may enable this for the supporter group. We really don't delete many posts.

CK Editor found your post delicious
We realized that folks were often clicking the "CLEAR" button in the reply editor by accident, thinking it was a submit button. So we made a design change. "Clear" is still there, as a link, but it should no longer compete visually with the submit/preview buttons.

Some moderation tools, otherwise, this is it.

While we are at it, you should go to My Profile and Edit Account Details and check the options you want there. There have been a lot of additions, and I personally like the Epicski Purple color scheme.

Why on earth would we do that?

You're going to kill the post whores! wink.gif

Many of the posts by the moderation team are the result of discussions in the moderator lounge and have nothing to to with the forum post count. If we did implement this, that is where it would be done. You don't really believe Trekchick has 30000 posts of song title fun do you?

I thought at first I liked the purple, but then found lots of black on purple text which was tough to read.

I think you'd see a change if you tried again. Go with what works best.

Are you using the fixed column width?

I just figured there was like a hidden thread she made five posts in everyday.

Not unless you changed it in the last hour.. I looked at it right before posting...  Yes, fixed column width is checked, I found it distracting to have the different sized boxes.

FWIW I like how todays(?) new forum release has changed it. I found the orange box annoying, but I do like having the little "Thread Starter" graphic next to the Time & Date Stamp. Whatever happened to the posts that used to get made detailing what was happening with the platform? I found those helpful and informative.

Updates are coming out about every two weeks, so I have been bad and not posted them.  Here is today's release:

Some features in this release include:

  • We're starting to make some improvements to the way content shows up in subscription emails. PM notifications, comment notifications, and immediate subscription notifications will look a bit friendlier after this release.
  • Superflagging will no longer be restricted to just one flagging "reason." All flags by superflaggers will hold the flagged content for moderation.
  • We're toning down the visual impact of the Thread Starter feature: the colored border will no longer show, the star is removed from the icon, and the date is back on the left where folks wanted it.
  • The full page editor will now respect your preference for "full width."

Fixes and little stuff:

  • A miscalculation that caused thread list pages to show the wrong page count (and some empty pages) in some cases was fixed.
  • The "add to a list" and "share your own image functions on the product page received some browser-specific fixes.
  • The mod queue should now submit long lists of validations more reliably, without hanging.
  • Insider Signatures showing raw markup should be cleaned up now.
  • Users viewing at "full width" will no longer see forced gutters on the page edges.
  • When you click on a thread title in the moderator history, to narrow down to that thread, the resulting view will now include all actions taken against posts in that thread.
  • When italicizing text right before a question mark, we no longer insert "http"
  • PM preview now works for PMs sent directly from the mod queue
  • The "who posted" table had some display issues in IE9 that were resolved. Social group invitations also got IE9 love.
  • "Users" was changed to "members" in the currently viewing boxes.
  • The BBCode editor no longer grows vertically after a post.
  • A few singular/plural grammatical errors around the site was fixed.

I really like the 'Who's posted" feature.  I missed that a lot!

I liked it better when posts in the moderator lounge and admin discussions didn't count toward post counts. smile.gif
