Friday afternoon destinations out of Boston

Hi all,

So my work schedule is such that I can leave Fridays around noon. I'm thinking to use some of these to leave right from work in Boston and head up to a mountain for a half day. Do you think that it's doable to head up to some of the NH mountains like Loon, Cannon, Waterville Valley, Gunstock, etc, or should I just stick with some place close like Wachusett? Out of these mountains I've only skied before at Wachusett so I was hoping to check out some of the other ones this season - will probably do places like Cannon for a full day trip, too, but I was curious if it'd be worth it for Friday afternoon, just to break in the new boots and such :)

Any thoughts you have are welcome! Thanks!

Leaving from the city getting to loon, waterville or cannon is almost not worth it. They are at least 2 hours, if not more from the city, leaving you with only 2 hours to ski. If you have a pass and plan on skiing the next day too it may be worth it but you are only going to get in less than two hours on friday at any of those resorts. You may want to look into night skiing if you are set on skiing fridays.

I guess you could drive to Crotched Mtn or Pats Peak in about an hour for variety, however, they're in same category for size/terrain as Wawa.

Night skiing is a good suggestion and would open up larger areas like Sunapee, Gunstock or Waterville that aren't too much further away.

IMO, nothing worth the drive within an hour or so of Boston. Closest adequate would be Sunapee, and that's more like 80 minutes in good weather. Add in time from car to top of lift, and you're looking at 2 pm or later. Might be worth it for trying out the new gear once or twice, I guess. But I'd get sick instead and go to WV or Cannon. devil.gif

Keep in mind that heading north on I93 out of Boston on a Friday afternoon is usually slow due to the heavy volume of everybody escaping for the weekend. It will add time to your drive.

^^^^ Yeah, you'd take 3 to get to Sunapee, but still a slog. Which is why I think a sudden illness makes more sense...

You could go to Wachusett; they have night skiing.  Otherwise, it's not worth it.  Traffic will be slow on Friday afternoons, and even if it's not you'll still spend way more time in the car than on snow.  It's just not worth the hassle.

Look up ski clubs in North Conway.  Join one.  Go up for weekends and ski two days each time you go up.  Get your days-on-snow count up.  Meet other people to ski with; have dinner with them on Friday and Saturday nights, share Sat and Sun breakfasts.  Party with them on Saturdays.  Become an every-weekend skier.  It's a way of life, and many people from MA do it.

There are 20 or so ski clubs in North Conway, most of which have lodges and reasonable membership dues, plus there are discount lift tickets available to members.  There's also a low-profile race league that you can ski in if you like, once you are a member.  There's usually a come-meet-the-clubs weekend on Halloween weekend, during which you get hosted at 10 of the clubs.  A bus takes you and all the other prospective members on the all-day Saturday tour.

If you'd like to come up and stay at my ski club, The Ski Wheelers, pm me and I'll get you a sponsor.
