Please Help Choosing New Skis

Hey, I'm a new member here and have spent some time reading through the forums but obviously could have missed some of the posts so please forgive if some of these questions are repeats. Anyways I'm 6' ~180lbs and a level 7-8 aggressive skier . I live on the east coast and probably ski 20 times a year here and then make about one trip a year to ski out west (usually for about 7 days) and I'm currently looking for a ski that could handle both the the snow in the east (50/50 of groomed runs and not and with some bumps and occasionally trees) and then also handle bowls out west such as at snowbird. So far I have roughly narrowed it down to Stockli Stormrider VXL or XXL, Volkl Kendo, Dynastar Sultan 85, Elan Apex, or a Fisher Motive 84 but am certainly open to other ideas. I know thats not so narrowed down but thats why i'm asking. Also, after what i've read here I understand that a perfect combo may not exist but I would like to be able to use my own skis in both places, but with a weighting towards the east coast as i will be doing the majority of my skiing there. Also, any advice on bindings would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post and thank you for any help!

Welcome to EpicSki!

All of the skis you suggest are decent daily drivers, especially for the mix you'll get in the east.  Not having any experience with the Stockli's or the Elan you listed, I can say that the Fischer Motive 84 and the Dynastar Sultan 85(consider the 94)  would be decent for a daily driver out west unless you get a huge dump, but then you can demo or rent a powder ski.

Have you had a chance to demo any of these skis?

Thank you for the reply! And no, I have not had a chance to demo any of them and will not for some time as I am studying abroad for a couple months. Also my college and the mountain nearby, are in the middle of nowhere so it is challenging to find a store with any sort of selection nearby and even harder one that allows you to demo for a reasonable price. So I guess at this point my questions are: There is obviously quiet a range of prices for these skis, with the stockli's being up to or over double some of the others, and I'm wondering if that type of price difference is warranted? And also, if I were to buy the skis without bindings included any suggestions on the type of bindings might be best? Also recently looked at the Line Prophet 90 skis and they seem to be something I might want to consider as well?

the prophet line are great skis. demoed the 115 and 90 last year. for what you said you ski, the 90 is almost perfect

Thank you! So if I have it narrowed down to the Prophet 90 or the Dynastar Sultan 85, any suggestions on bindings? And also are the 2012 models of these skis any different besides the graphics? A little confused about that.

well for 2012 season, line is still making the prophet 90. The completely re-designed Line Prophet 90 skis feature a Metal Matrix™ & new! Capwall™ construction for a smoother high speed ride and lightning fast edge control. We’ve even added a subtle Early Rise™ in the tip to get you some extra float on uneven terrain & effortless turn initiation on the hard pack. Combine the unmatched power of a Formula 1 race car with the lighting fast reflexes of a street bike, and . . . you get the idea, just point em’.

that is straight from lines 2011 2012 website. if they are anything like last years, gauranteed you'll like them. and btw the graphics this year are dope.

as for the sultan 85, i think dynastar is making them again for this year, unchanged, i think. might have to check that. either choice i think you'll be happy though.

good skiing.

Great, yeah I think I am going to go for the prophets. Would you have any recommendations for the bindings to get with them? Thank you again for the replys!
