Ski Slang 2011/2012 edition

Well i know theres alrdy a thread similar but it is a bit out of date being from 2004...and with ski slang changing faster then computer technology...i figured it might be time to start an updated thread. post up the new old or variations of some of the ones u know...or maybe just wanna find out what they mean.

sluff - windblown that falls over a ridge creating a new powder pocket

crud - whats left over after a tracked out powder day

slarve/slarving- a carving turn with a sliding beginning middle and/or end

smear/smearing- sliding sideways near perpendicular to the fall line usually to check speed and/or to stay slowed down not carving flowing turns

gaper - everyones favorite...many variations of what the actually are...mine is - a beginner/intermediate who skis (usually in perfect wedge form) and watch in awe as i go screaming by them

some id like more info on :

Jong - im assuming jerk off is in there?

maggot(tgr) - pretty sure its the bc community in general climbers skiers snowboarders backcountry seekers?

troll - to start or post in a thread simply to start an argument or to make one look stupid? (I get a feeling this one is confused by many or maybe just im the confused one)?

Correct me if im wrong on any of these...as i very well could be...just my take on em

Id post a few ive seen from SFB but im afraid id be even more confused after he explained them to me....maybe he can grace us with his presence and cast a light on some of his very own slang...but that could be a whole other thread all on its own! Lol

JONG = Jerk Off Newbie Gaper (always said with affection, esp. on TGR).

Gaper refers to tourist types that cruise down mountain roads marked "Speed Limit 45" at 20 mph, backing up traffic while they stare at the mountain splendor they don't have in Houston, et al.

The rest are pretty accurate.

I always thought a troll was someone who took a ridiculous position they didn't actually support in order to see if they could goad someone else into espousing an even more ridiculous position.

Sluff more often refers to snow cut loose by a skier in the process of turning, and it usually is limited to the current snow layer.    It usually occurs on steep lines. The size of a sluff varies from a one turn release that slides 20 yards, to a release that propagates more snow as it slides the entire fall line of 50 yards or more.  The term sluff actually does not refer specifically to a wind event or a ridge site, though those are contributing factors in many sluffs. Sluff is defined as distinct from snow that releases naturally of its own weight or tension or is bombed to release, and may consist of several layers of snow, and can technically be called an avalanche. As sluff is often used inter-changeably with avalanche, one or the other word is often misused.

Sketch is a term with several meanings: dicy, difficult, barely adequate, on the edge, unsafe or impractical. but also seems to mean cool, good, challenging.

Rad is gaining cred, and seems to mean good but with on the edge or pushing the envelope connotations.

I don't usually like making fun of lesser-skilled skiers (hey, we're all in this together, right), but one term has always cracked me up:

SPORE - Stupid Person On Rental Equipment

I've used and heard others use the phrase: Sluffalanche - which I kind of like the sound of.  For those mini avalanches that seem a little too big to just call sluff but aren't significant enough (and without a big fracture line) to call an actual avalanche.

A sluff is big enough to knock your ass down, hard, and plow you into a tree or over a cliff, or smash you into rocks. A sluff is big enough to get all my respect. Sometimes you want to link your turns in the fall line an' all, but it is not wise, better to shift your line to one side and let your sluff move through.  Check Shane in one of his matchstick films, not too happy about his tactics with respect to a sluff above screamin' sea-min, that totally ruined his day.

Sounds like a sluffalanche to me.  wink.gif

Boney:  An area or zone that has not reached optimum coverage, rocky.  Could be a wind blown ridge or the crux of a chute.  "The east facing bowls are still boney".

Kneewaister:  A Newschooler or Park Rat wannabe type that insists that their waistline is somewhere just above their knees.  (I made this one up, but hoping it catches on).

To add to Davluri's definition of sluff...I believe you are thinking of "spindrift", which is snow in the moving process of being blown in to an area and frequency increases with wind gusts. It can come down the slope in waves as the new surface deposits collect and release from above in a "sluff" or "sluffalanche" cool.gif. Scary and unnerving when ice climbing. This can deposit in to a slab and release when enough collects to overload whatever it is sitting on. Go watch any really steep lee terrain when the wind picks up after a snowfall to see it in action.

there ya go...when i was at alta last april i arrived to boilerplate/bulletproof (ice) all over the mountain...even the groomers were miserable...i ended up seeking out this spindrift each time i went up a chair...it was blowing 40-50 the first day so u could find it fairly easily if u looked for it...actually made for a decent day...even if it was only 10-15 turns at a time....i kept thinking sluff or blower...thx for clearin that up.

When the wind is filling in specific (leeward) terrain features, a vein of wind-buff forms and you can see it as distinct from the over-all firm surface.  Duff is a skier-spray generated vein or border of soft snow I believe.
