I actually saw this ski rig (sans Gaper Boy) about 10 years ago at Ski Cooper, CO. I always wondered who the"SKI GOD" was.

You all missed the point ( or message) from the initial post!

Go back a few years,,think of Warren Miller and his "car" ! Now that was a ski bum!

I really do not like the term, "bum" ! It has a slight negative tone to it. Like when your parents said, "are you going to stay a ski bum all your life?"

I use the term, "ski gypsy" !

Let me explain. You all know the term ski and what it infers !

Ha,,,,now that "gypsy" term !

- no roots to one spot

-"special" unique value system

-love of life, music, freedom, friendships

-can survive in all sorts of conditions, terrains, revolutions, and even stock crashes

-appears "poor" to the yuppies,,,,yet has no debts, but has cash, diamonds and gold well hidden from IRS

-knows the spots to go to,,but never gives them on net

-knows where to sleep for free, but never posts it on net

-knows where to get food for near free prices ( yes in ski resorts), but never posts how

-knows where to get skis ( great skis for 30% below cost), but will not tell ( perhaps other gypsies)

-knows how to sleep at top, during a snow storm and the ski down first.

-knows how to get free lift tickets,,but will never post that also

-knows how to spot another ski gypsy

Now back to that "transportation" issue.

If you are a ski gypsy you know the three parameters of a great ski "car";

1. it has to get you there

2. it has to "store" serious ski material ( 10 pairs of skis, 3 boots, 5 sets of poles, 4 jackets, 5 pants, 4 underwear, etc,,,,

3. it has to "store" you

What others think ( status item) not important !

I got a small school bus type van  ( for $500 ) with a serious diesel. Took all seats out. Insulated with foam. Installed propane. Wall to wall bed! Serious sound system. Boot heaters. Voilà

I am sure you are all wondering,,why no picture?

Silly question,,,,how can I be a ski gypsy,,be under the cyber radar, under the cyber social world and still do what I do?

Too many of us would cause problems to the ski industry who just wants to make you spend!

They do not like gypsies!

But I will give you a hint!

Be first on the ski lift.

Look at some older skiers who do not have the latest; North Face, Descent, Spyder outfits

Look in their faces. If you see a glint of youth in their eye. A sweet smile and  quiet steady walk!

Then perhaps just perhaps it is me !

If you really want to confirm if "that is the Ski Gypsy"  just follow me down one run.

The follow me and learn how to ski for nearly nothing !!!!

Respectfully

The Ski Gypsy

^^^ Being free to ski.....awesome!

(someone who has slept in Sugar Bowl's parking lot in a 1965 Chevy Panel truck, after hangin' out at the bar to attempt to score warmer accommodations, can relate)

Man I wish I can do that Ski Gypsy! But you are right I was looking for more of a Ski Bums wheels, not your Honda Pilot or 100,000 Mercedes! I was looking for old beat up converted buses, old pickups pulling the smallest cheapest camper. Cars covered in decals. A real Ski Bums transport to all those seceret spots! Thats what I'm talking about!

On a some what related topic, read the sub-title, 'An adventure of the gypsy skiers' circa 1976. Granted, they were on a slightly different adventure than Torlauf but I like the 'gypsy' handle. A little more noble sounding.

I've seen those types of vehicles in the lot; 340,000 miles and still rippin' with one headlight and the door bungeed shut, like me, ha!  I'll carry a camera more this year. they are rad.

I'm going to leave a note on the really good ones: "need a legal place to park, with head privileges?"  Do my part. Heck, but for the luck of the draw.....

Well I'm sure there are lots ot those kind of cars, ect but I really didn't pay much attention to them, I've also seen them at the resorts and parked on Hwy 550 doing some back country skiing. This winter I will also carry my camera to get some photos. On the other thread all the cars except a few are somewhat, what I'm looking for the rest are just weekend worriors out with the family. Well at least thats what I see. I'm a truck driver and for two months of the year I take off for vacation, last year I started skiing for the first time, something I started in 2000. This Dec, and Jan I'm going for it. So if you see a 1958 Ford pickup with a snowmoblie in the bed and pulling a camper trailer, stop by and have a beer with me and that goes for anyone out there!

Oh,,I forgot to tell you!

I had many stickers and such on the van,,,then discovered when I parked over night at Sugarloaf that the police "identified" my van as "suspect" ! As the agent said, "too hippie" ! Threy were so sorry not to find, some nake girls, hash and young long long haired males with beads! ! Had to see manager to explain my project!  Now I stay low profile since so many stickers invites "visitors" !

One small hint ,,to you "dreamers" ! Remember those English classes in high school,,,that is how to write correctly, with precision and with less words,,,well now is the time to put those "skills" in practice!

Some ski mags will pay to follow a gypsy in his "adventures" on wheels! Yes we are coming back to older styled articles ON SKIING, rather on just marketing articles for ski resorts, restaurants, cars, skis!

Soon it will appear!

Till then,

Ski Gypsy

there are stickers and stickers. I'll look for a good photo out there. but if you keep the stickers on the box and on the glass it says: "I care about the value of my car, the quality of the paint, the re-sale, the ability to restore to original." The true ski gypsy has no such concerns. It's the snow, man, that's what it's about.

Mad Mex,

May I suggest a unique "look", far above the sticker route! I promise you that it will make skiers stop and "look" !

On my Thule,,,I have riveted some serious 210 Downhill skis, that look so new! I can give you some sources for older new new skis which you can rivet or screw in sides!

Unique look!

Good luck in your new transport! First step in becoming a ski gypsy !

Do you know second step ?

Respectfully,

Ski Gypsy

That will be cool idea Ski Gypsy, well I guess you can see me as being old school in the way I see things. Hope by the time the resorts start up I will have figure out the scond step. In the mean time I'll rely on others such as yourself for info and ideas to be a Ski Gypsy (at least for two Months) of the year. Oh as far as skis go I have two pairs and two pairs of boots! Hope in the years to come I'll have a vast collection to ski anywhere and any type of snow. I plan to vist as many resorts and places in two Months as I can. I will leave the Wife and kids at home, well maybe for the first two weeks they will be traveling with me as last year my wife got to try snowboarding and I think she got hooked because this year she wants to take lessons to get her past the winnie hill and try some real boarding.
