Mispronounced Ski Area Names
Kind of a dumb topic, but maybe a few nuggets will come out of it.
What ski area names do you frequently hear mispronounced and would like to enlighten us tourists about proper pronunciation? You could also tell us about famous ski trails or widely mispronounced ski gear and technical terms. Don't worry if you don't use perfect phonetic spelling, I don't. We'll figure it out.
I'll start with a few answers...
Pico ski area in Vermont is pronounced Pie-koh, not Pee-koh.
Plattekill ski area in NY is pronounced Platt-kill, not Platty-kill.
Bellearye, NY is Bell-air, correct?
Cockaigne, NY is Cock-ain, correct?
Sous-bois (French for glades) is sue-bwah.
Massanutten, VA is Mass-a-nuttin, not Mass-of-nothing
and a few questions...
Loveland? As a tourist I pronounce it Love-land, like Disneyland, but I guess
Front Rangers say Lovelyn, like Brooklyn??
Le Massif? I pronounce it Lay-Mah-seef, but I think I heard locals go almost silent on the Le and just say the word "Massive" (like English term for something big). (Of course, many foreign language terms could open up a big can of worms.)
What about Corbet's Couloir? I think some tourists might say Cor-bets'-Kool-Ore, but is the proper way is Cor'-bits-Kool-waar?
What about Bousquet ski area in MA? Boos-kett, Boos-kay or Boo-kay?
Berkshire East, MA? Berk-sher or Berk-shy-ur?
What else you got? Anybody able to take a stab at a few of the most famous ski resorts in the Alps?
