Western Colorado skiers got a huge boost last week when Andy Daly (Colorado Ski Hall of Fame) along with Tom and John Gart (formerly of Gart Sporting Goods) bought Powderhorn Ski Area and adjoining 700 acres for $1.4 million.

That's neat.  Seems like they got a lot for the money.  Do they have to absorb a ton of debt or something?

Former Vail Resorts executive Andy Daly's high bid of $1.4 million earned him not only the Powderhorn Ski Resort along with a neighboring inn and restaurant and acres for ski area expansion, but also a more than 700-acre parcel of nearby land that could be developed into a golf course and home sites.

Daly said he plans to make some small improvements to lifts and snowmaking equipment and to add a tubing park before this winter's ski season. His new ski area includes four lifts and 1,600 skiable acres and attracts about 75,000 skiers annually.

If he owns the mineral rights, I wouldn't be surprised if they drill gas wells on some of the acerage . The royalties will more than reimburse the purchase price. Powderhorn is pretty close to Rifle which has been heavily drilled.
