Tags--They Suck so Bad I consider them broken

Every time I try to bother with tagging a thread I give up in frustration. For instance I just started a thread about the 2018 winter olympic selection, I tried to tag it with the tag olympics or winter olympics. The problem is there is no generic winter olympic tags, only one for the 2010 games in Vancouver or for the olympic sponsorship committee. Why do we have to have to be stuck with the tags in a database. Why can't the system just act like any other search engine (and I'm not even applying it to the function of actually finding relevant information to your search rolleyes.gif) and search based on the text of the tags so we're not stuck with these tags that are on a list? In my experience they have been all but unusable because what I want is never on the list.

I did find one after some help from Nolo because the tag for Sno Mountain is "sn-mountain-resort"; because the tag system cant handle umlauts it couldn't be there, but instead of just putting an "o" the system makes it sn-. And because the system is not intuitive at all when I type "sno" and look through the list of tags it doesn't show up because of already typing an o.

Certainly a moderator can add tags, but I bet we could give this permission to additional groups.  Let me check.

There is something to be said for not having a lot of random tags, but you're right, we can't foresee every new subject that should be tagged.
