Town "twinning"

On an Italian ski magazine online site I read the announcement of the twinning of the town of
Aspen with the town of Abetone.

Whereas much has been said, written and told about Aspen, I don't know if people here (or outside Italy, for that matters)
knows or at least has heard of Abetone.
Abetone lies in Tuscany, on the Appennines mountains and was the home of at least two Italian skiing champions of old, Zeno Colò and Celina Seghi...

Here's the news (in Italian)
http://www.rivistasci.it/5472/lancio-ufficiale-del-gemellaggio-abetone-aspen

while reading I was wondering about the twinning choice on Aspen side, until I read throught it all...
An offer proferred last year by Abetone and WWII memories of the 10th mountain division (didn't the 10th fought in Italy during the winter of 1944-1945?) might have something to do with the choice...

We should see about twinning Madesimo with, like, Whitefish or something.

Supposedly they are looking into Queenstown, New Zealand, as a sister city for us right now.  We were also contacted in the past about doing it with someplace in Germany, but I think it fizzled.

Thanks for posting this.  I knew nothing about Abetone, but this piqued my interest.

I am currently taking a small vacation in the Alps (Val Camonica...) 500 km of MTB trails, plus plenty of walks, possibilites to visit the WWI trenches and likewise stuff (plenty around, the frontline and before that the border between Italy and Austria was passing here)
This might pique your interest as well Trek...
As for Abetone, what a better occasion to enjoy good food, seaview (IIRC one could se the mediterranean from the top of the mountains there) and skiing all in one...
